I was wondering if anyone had any pics of one of these mats being used during a gaming session. And maybe, while you're at it, some close ups of the material (both sides). Thanks in advance.

They look a bit silly, cartoon-like. Remind me of the Wings of Glory/War mats.

Yep… too flash computer game looking to me.

Keep in mind you can get the mats without the "cartoonish" roads and woods. I bought mine without the drawings, just the ground cover, and it looks just fine.

NCC1717 posted some pictures of a game on my Cigar Box Battles mats recently. One of them and a link to the others can be found on this thread

Hmm … I bet if they did large scale mats of Waterloo and the environs it would sell for map games and such.

Here are some pictures of the matts in HAWKs club meetings:

I prefer the ones without roads, because they give me more scenario flexibility.

The material is fleece. It is a bit stretchy so it drapes nicely over hills without a lot of buckling and bulging.

Thanks for the input. They look better than I imagined and I quite like them. I don't find them "cartoony" as much as they have the same style as the artwork found in modern game manuals, D&D etc.

They look a helluva lot better than some layouts I've seen. I'm going to give the Apocalypse one a try and if it's not up to scratch then the kids can use it for their Lego / Mega Bloks Halo battles :)

I do agree the printed roads can limit the scenario or at least make it inconvenient, requiring something to cover them up.

How are they for 'snagging' figures? I don't like felt because of that nasty habit of grabbing at figure bases.

Never had a problem with it.
