Sign me up, Scotty

Guthroth15 Sep 2014 12:04 p.m. PST

I'm in.

kabrank16 Sep 2014 4:48 a.m. PST

Yup

sjwalker3816 Sep 2014 11:25 a.m. PST

And me.

Just call it "colonial wars" and let the posters decide – a bit of cross-posting will deal with any issues of where the boundaries lie.

FWIW I'd say that such a board would focus on the 19th century wars of Imperialism waged by European nations outside Europe itself from c. 1840-1902.

Plains Wars are better discussed under the 'Old West' board, anything post-1914 is either WW1 or InterWar. The Maximilian Adventure is arguably a colonial war but the Mexican-American war, Texan war of Independence etc are better covered under the general 19th century category. The Spanish and Portugese expeditions to South America in the 16th century (Cortes et al) are arguably better covered by the Renaissance boards.

When can we have the board please? Seems there's general support for this one.

Oh Bugger26 Sep 2014 4:27 p.m. PST

No answer came the stern reply.

tkdguy29 Sep 2014 11:37 p.m. PST

I'm all for it.

Hopefully waiting

Never too late to get on board:

Just a couple of recent requests for the same. I emailed the editor with these links and nothing came of it.

But, for what it's worth, I support such a board.

I have no dog in the 1812 discussion but we do have VSF as its own board. Surely the board being discussed here will have considerably broader appeal.

Oh Bugger03 Oct 2014 12:19 p.m. PST

I think it would be popular.

sjwalker3803 Oct 2014 1:45 p.m. PST

Well, it's had more positive responses than the proposal for a 'war of 1812' period had before it was created.

And that board has had precisely 10 threads started since its inauguration (3 by Tango), which I suspect that a Colonial board might better.

Seems our editors are not in favour?

Oh Bugger04 Oct 2014 3:53 a.m. PST

Hard to say sj perhaps Bill's attention is elsewhere.

Volleyfire05 Oct 2014 2:24 a.m. PST

I'm in! Colonial Wars as a first suggestion please. Victorian Wars as a second if Colonial doesn't suit as a title..

sjwalker3805 Oct 2014 1:59 p.m. PST

A lot of long term members seem to be in favour as well, if that makes a difference!

Oh Bugger06 Oct 2014 8:08 a.m. PST

Let's hope so.

Victorian Colonial helps define a period better than just Colonial, which by itself would imply a much broader time swath from Conquistadors to French Indo-China

Inkpaduta08 Oct 2014 10:15 a.m. PST

Okay we have a War of 1812 board, are we saying that more people are interested in the War of 1812 than all of those interested in the Colonial Wars? But we have a War of 1812 board (a Carlist War board to for that matter) but still no Colonial board?

Oh Bugger10 Oct 2014 5:01 a.m. PST

I am at a loss to explain the seeming indifference to this proposed board. It clearly has support from members, some of them paying members too.

sjwalker3810 Oct 2014 8:31 a.m. PST

Can we have some feedback from the Editors please?

Potentially a much more interesting and far less controversial board than Ultra Moderns, but still offering the opportunity to discuss massacres, genocide, European intervention in foreign lands and 'the great game' :-)

Oh Bugger13 Oct 2014 4:10 a.m. PST

Still no answer I see.

sjwalker3824 Oct 2014 3:13 p.m. PST

Hello? Anyone there? I'm actually more interested in a colonials board than the minority of bigoted extremists that make a poll on holocaust denial necessary.

Just to get this poll to the top of the board again!

darthfozzywig24 Oct 2014 7:54 p.m. PST

"Queen Victoria's Little Wars"

Oh Bugger25 Oct 2014 5:25 p.m. PST

One more go then.

Early morning writer26 Oct 2014 6:10 p.m. PST

Maybe if enough of us boycott TMP until such time as we see such a topic listed it will happen sooner than later. Just think of how many finished projects for us all if we stay away for a few months! : )

Oh Bugger27 Oct 2014 5:01 a.m. PST

We, it seems, are invisible to the owner of this site. Did the lad who pmed Bill ever get a response?

MichaelCollinsHimself27 Oct 2014 5:21 a.m. PST

It`s a good idea to have one here – or shall we just go over to yahoo or somewhere`s else and start a group there?

sjwalker3827 Oct 2014 10:50 a.m. PST

That's a thought – how many of us who expressed an interest here would be prepared to sign up for a wargames-specific Victorian colonial Yahoo Group?

MichaelCollinsHimself27 Oct 2014 12:53 p.m. PST

OK… let`s see shall we?

Don't want to dampen your energy and enthusiasm for starting something new but you guys may not be aware that another such Yahoo Group, with the following mission statement --

"A mailing list devoted to Colonial Wargaming and warfare in the 1800's. Suggestions for sources, terrain making methods, miniatures, and rules will be common, as will discussions of games played and scenarios…
wargame, wargames, war, battle, military, simulation, hobby,
model, modeling, models, modelmaking, Victorian bla bla bla"

-- has existed since 1999 and currently has just over 2800 members.

You can check it out here:

I'm a member but to be honest I've never been a fan of Yahoo Groups in general, based on what I have always found to be their rather clunky online logistics. Still, I try to participate in email discussions whenever I have something to contribute, and occassionally post pics on the site.

There are several other Yahoo Groups based on more specific Victorian campaigns (the Indian Mutiny), theaters of war North-West Frontier), and even rules sets (TSATF), just to mention a few that I also belong to. If you search for other specific colonial military history or colonial wargaming Yahoo Groups you may find a few more, for instance I also belong to the Maximilian War group.

Again, I think it's great that you have the energy and enthusiasm to start a new group, just want to pass on some potentially pertinant information.

MichaelCollinsHimself28 Oct 2014 12:02 a.m. PST

Thanks Guru,

I`ll join that one for sure!

There were no applications/approvals pending, so I deleted the group.

Mike.

sjwalker3829 Oct 2014 10:26 a.m. PST

Great suggestion – no need to re-invent the wheel when an excellent yahoo group already exists.

Also worth checking out the Victorian Wars forum for such very useful material (wwww.victorian wars.com) .

MichaelCollinsHimself29 Oct 2014 10:54 p.m. PST

…and thanks Simon for the recommendation !

sjwalker3830 Oct 2014 12:01 p.m. PST

As MadGuru points out, there are several campaign-specific Yahoo Groups worth looking at (I belong to ones interested in the Mutiny, Cape Frontier Wars and NWF for starters). There are also several other forums, such as 1879Isandlwana dedicated to the Zulu War.

Shame that there is no editorial interest but, ho-hum, it just means I'll be spending more time on other sites and expect to meet up with some of you elsewhere.

By the way, if anyone is based in South Yorkshire and fancies meeting up for a colonial game anytime, get in touch!

Simon

Yes, would support, especially if we went as far as the first decade of the 20th century in Africa.

Gents, there's a poll that needs your votes NOW – bet you never expected it to happen.

Thanks for pushing the issue again John/Winston
