Hey, does anybody out there play either of these two? I have been eyeing both of them and am debating on which one I should get. I want to be able to paint models, have some way to kind of do a solitaire thing, and want a game that is fun but not so complicated that someone who doesn't share my interest in über-complicated games. Also, if you think there is a better option for what I want then let me know. (Note: I already do Flames of War) Thanks is advance! |

I'm not familiar with Art of Tactic but I have Memoir and love it. Here's a review from my blog link And a battle report link The only (minor) issue is playing solo. It's not as intense if you know the opponent's cards. How to deal with solo play has been discussed on TMP TMP link |

I'd be curious to hear from anyone on Art Of Tactic as well – certainly looks intriguing given the number of expansion kits it appears to support. I'm also a fan of M'44. Now, I would be tempted to argue it's not a wargame but a game with a war theme but that doesn't mean it isn't fun. I really appreciate how they've been able to simulate a variety of units with fairly simple mechanisms. I'd say the main complaint with the game is that you need the right cards to do what you want – i.e. if you want to attack on the left flank but all your cards are centre and right, well…too bad… Personally, I like that degree of 'friction' but for players who want total control, they definitely aren't a fan. You know…not knowing your budget (although you do play FoW… ) but I'd say pick up a base set and give it a try. There's lots of gameplay in the base set, and if you like it, you can always expand as 90% of the expansions are still in print. Also, just to add, I read Warwell's blog and agree 100%. |

Memoir is a less complicated game. as for the card issue you can make a home rule that you can trade cards in before the start of play and draw new cards. roll the dice equal to # of cards. # of stars rolled you can trade in that # of cards. it helps a little when your stuck with the dig in card. |

I think the main difference (as evidenced by the post above) is that people actually play Memoir 44, whereas, does anyone play Art of Tactic? I don't know anyone who does, although we buy the toys. |

I love memoir 44, but I'd use the vassal rather than solo. Have you looked at Tide of Iron? Another boardgame come miniatures game. Gives a good solo game. |

I have recently got into Art of Tactics and find it a great game to play. They have some nice rules in there such as if you cannot eee an enemy target then you cannot plot a fire and move action, which I like. It is certainly more complicated than Memoir. If you want to take a look at the rules, go for the third edition which are so much better than the first two. Also go to BGG and take a look at John Darlintons battle reports and reviews. He goes to great lengths to explain the game a lot better than I can. Sorry cant post any links as on tab now and havent worked out how to copy and paste. Lol. |

M44 does have an online version which is a massive bonus if you cannot get an opponent at home… not to mention the time saved having to deploy the board and pieces and then but it all away again after. |
