Ordinarily I would not support this stupid proposal, but lately…

Knight of St John30 Jul 2014 9:14 a.m. PST

Wouldn't it just mean the trolls have to wait a week before they do their normal stuff.

whitejamest30 Jul 2014 9:19 a.m. PST

I'd hate to see TMP made less welcoming just as a bandaid to deal with the dishonorable conduct of a few ne'er-do-wells. I share your frustration, but I think they just have to be waited out.

War Panda30 Jul 2014 9:20 a.m. PST

I think they should have to swear the oath of allegiance to Bill like they rest of us 33 degree members …oops have I said too much

morrigan30 Jul 2014 9:21 a.m. PST

I agree that something needs to be done, John. Maybe moderate new members posts for a while?

doc mcb30 Jul 2014 9:25 a.m. PST

When I post on other fora it typically doesn't appear until some moderator looks at it.

Maybe all posts done with a few days (three?) of initial membership go into a pool to be checked before appearing?

I'm sick of the drive-by scurilous posts, so would like to see something done.

No.

I fail to see why it's so hard to just ignore the trolls (by which I'm not referring to the recent "ignore" functionality – I mean just don't pay them any attention). Give a troll no attention, and eventually they'll go find another bridge. Putting up barriers for them only gives them goals.

It's actually a very good idea to implement when there is much drive by activity. In such cases, people are all amped up to post inflammatories right away.

Doc Mb's version is even better. I've also been on fora where first post is moderated. It worked well on yahoo groups.

Moderate until x posts sounds good, certainly should have enough staff to cope. Would solve a few problems.

Rrobbyrobot30 Jul 2014 10:18 a.m. PST

Why potentially punish all new members because of a few bad apples? Are you ready to re-up and be treated in such a manner? While I'm pretty fed up with some new arrivals of late, it's really been just a few folks. Maybe only two actual people.
As someone once put it… "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others."
So, if you don't want to put up with the recent stupidity of a few, remember the stifle button. And that new feature, the ignore button.
Of course, one could do worse than ignoring such behavior the old fashioned way…

jeffreyw330 Jul 2014 10:37 a.m. PST

Seems to be working for LAF… shrug.

Allen5730 Jul 2014 10:41 a.m. PST

could someone please give me link to one of these posts?

Thanks,

EMPERORS LIBRARY30 Jul 2014 11:15 a.m. PST

Yes, unless they pay for a full years supporting membership!

Robert Kennedy30 Jul 2014 11:16 a.m. PST

I own a few Groups and moderate some others. New member's messages are always moderated for about a week.Usually works but ther are some that wait and be nice for that week and then show their true selves. Then the Ban Hammer drops grin.

Boondock Saint30 Jul 2014 11:40 a.m. PST

I think its a good idea.

And if they continue to be obnoxious, hunt them down and shoot them like the rabid curs they are!

why is "moderating" a new user a "punishment"…is having immediate free-expression on this site a "human basic right"?

Ron W DuBray30 Jul 2014 1:50 p.m. PST

there are a lot of web sights that moderate the first 10 or so posts made by new people. I think its a very good idea.

Cyrus the Great30 Jul 2014 1:53 p.m. PST

NO!

14Bore30 Jul 2014 1:55 p.m. PST

No as well.

Balin Shortstuff30 Jul 2014 2:04 p.m. PST

Eh, they'll just create a half dozen or so "sleeper" accounts. Just like before.

raylev330 Jul 2014 2:35 p.m. PST

It would be a shame to let a few jerks inhibit the normal functioning of this forum. Unfortunately Bill is between a rock and a hard place on this one. There is no good answer for dealing with these immature little pricks.

Robert Kennedy30 Jul 2014 2:52 p.m. PST

Hmmmmmm…Ignores,Stifles and now being "moderated" for a way to weed out potential trouble makers are all "punishments" now? My God. Why is it with some that when something is implemented or suggested to make this a better place for it's members they make it out to be a bad thing?

BrotherSevej30 Jul 2014 6:17 p.m. PST

This will hamper the non-involved more than those who are.

Rrobbyrobot30 Jul 2014 6:19 p.m. PST

It's apparent that my choice of words bothers some. So, instead of focusing on the word punishment why don't I try this…
Many new members seem to join this site with a question on their mind. I don't mind moderators looking over these first posts. But that's not what I was reacting to in the first place. I was reacting to the idea of new members not being able to post anything for as long as a week. What a warm welcome that would be…
We should welcome new members and their questions. Even if some very few come here to troll. Those are dealt with in short order.
Let me say further. If I had been kept from posting anything for a week when I first joined I would not be here now. And I would not have sponsored anyone. Nor would I have recommended this site to others.
