…someone starts a new thread (or topic if you prefer) on the exact same subject as one that was started 2 days ago.
So what? Who is harmed?
Why do some feel compelled to post a "TMP link" with no comment besides that? I find that lame, and "I caught you!" bad manners.

But what REALLY irritates me (like you care grin) is when said link was last added to in 2010.
It's as if once a thread is started, everything that needs to be said about it has already been said.
Well, it hasn't.
I often re-visit the same thing I started previously in the past, just in case there is anything new to add. You might find 3 or 4 threads on the Yankee Pennamite Wars, all started by me. And I just might do it again, once I run a game.

And do not blame this on the TMP search function. That is irrelevant.

And who is harmed by the posting of a link to an older thread on the same topic. No one. And I find it useful.

The Tin Dictator14 Jul 2014 9:02 a.m. PST

Hasn't this already been discussed?
Can somebody do a quick search please?

What paint are people using for rat asses these days?

Robert Kennedy14 Jul 2014 9:21 a.m. PST

Meh.

Space Monkey14 Jul 2014 9:34 a.m. PST

Yeah, complaints over 'Thread Necromancy' and creating additional posts about a previous topic never made much sense to me

darthfozzywig14 Jul 2014 9:51 a.m. PST

But if you create a new thread, it might push my "come look at my blog!" post off the front page!11!!11!

Or at least one notch further down the front page.

May I venture to guess….pale pink!

Thread Necromancy is not bringing up the same topic, it's responding to an old, dead thread. If you're posting some useful information to an older thread that's not so bad, it's the 'yea, I agree with so-and-so' posts or some other useless reply to a thread that's more than a year old can be annoying. Especially if it's actually a topic you're interested in. Since TMP doesn't appear to show when a thread was started on the message board I have wasted plenty of time thinking 'wow, I'm sure we've had this exact discussion before' only to stumble across one of my OWN posts in the thread, realize the post is 18 months old, and scroll down to the bottom to find some knave has posted 'I don't understand that question' or some similar twaddle.

The most egregious example of this I can recall (another forum) was someone responding to a three year old thread with a 'LOL, the OP doesn't have any idea what he's talking about' and then again a day later with a 'it's been 24 hours, I bet he's too much of a wuss to respond to this' post. We then had to inform the poster that the OP had, in fact, passed away two years prior, and could not be expected to respond in 24 hours, or ever. So Kids, remember, check the last post time/date stamp before you start getting snarky!

But yea, in comparison two threads on the same topic seems much better, to my mind.

I love Johns rants. :-). No really I do.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut14 Jul 2014 2:29 p.m. PST

I love John's rants, even when they are about me. Lately, I have taken to posting a TMP link in Tango's posts if someone beat him to it. However, I consider this just good-natured ribbing, as I am one of Tango's biggest supporters. And John's.

Maybe there were really good answers in the older post? I don't mind a link to something informative on the posted topic.

Meh!

Robert Kennedy14 Jul 2014 5:13 p.m. PST

When I post a thread link to a previously discussed topic I do usually mention that some may find some more info at said previous thread.

Ivan DBA14 Jul 2014 7:52 p.m. PST

I don't think it is always intended as a rebuke of the poster, it also serves the useful purpose of directing folks to the other discussion .

StarfuryXL514 Jul 2014 8:19 p.m. PST

But if you create a new thread, it might push my "come look at my blog!" post off the front page!

Worse, it might push one of Tango01's posts off the front page. wink

stenicplus15 Jul 2014 7:34 a.m. PST

Don't go there Starfury!

Perhaps it's an age thing. Heheh.
