That fiend Doug at MSC is trying to make me dump my 3000+ 25/28, AWI figures, so he sent me some sample 40mm LI and Minuteman figures.
Well, now I have to paint them!
Can anyone recommend a set of REAL skirmish rules for 5 figures on a side?
I want each player to command one dude.
The general idea I have is that 5 British LI get cut off from their company at Concord and are trying to get back, while 5 Minutemen wish to smite them for general ungodliness.

I suppose if worse comes to worst, I can write my own rules, but I am no good at that.

Terrific figures, BTW. And the LI even have identifiable bastion loop lace! So, obviously, they are the 38th Foot.

I have cross posted to several Boards, since this can be a general set of man to man horse and musket rules.

Song of Drums & Shakos. Although each player runs a band of 5-10 miniatures, so not exactly to your requirements, unless this is for two players. If each player is running one figure, it sounds like you need an RPG.

Best of luck with your search.

You're practically at RPG level for that. I don't any AWI -specific rules, but maybe Savage Worlds?

You could also adapt whatever western gunfight rules you like.

^^^ I was going to suggest that you could adapt Desperado or the gun fighting rules of your choice.

I think the OFM would appreciate any free on line rules suggestions too.
Something to allow for taking some time to reload.

Timotheous21 Jun 2014 10:47 p.m. PST

Well, SDS accounts for reloading, but also, doesn't the WRG rules "Fire and Steel" do the same? I played them once or twice, but they were not my cup of tea.

THW's "Long Rifle" should suit you as well.

The old Donald Featherstone skirmish rules

Sharpe Practice has an AWI variant and Muskets & Tomahawks seem to be popular skirmish rules these days. Surely you could use TSATF too.

Jimmy da Purple22 Jun 2014 5:56 a.m. PST

I think Old West skirmish rules would fit best. The only one I have used is Legends of the Old West.

I am quietly hiding in the background rubbing my hands together and smiling!

John the OFM22 Jun 2014 7:27 a.m. PST

More like smirking and cackling.

I seem to recall Foundry publishing a 7YW set in MWAN several years ago. They were similar to their Old West " Rules with No Name". That might work.

Could ask about the ones mentioned here:

Despite the link, they aren't a boardgame.

I'd second Flintlock & Ramrod.

Face it John, it's just not going to work. You need to buy a few more 40mm figs. 100 should do.

I am currently reviewing American Uncivil War by Architects of War. I think it might be just the ticket for your 1:1 needs.

Inkpaduta12 Jul 2014 2:08 p.m. PST

John,

I agree with Munster, get a copy of Donald Featherstone's Skirmish Wargaming, edited by John Curry. I think it would be very close to what you are looking for.

Resurrecting this post. I would like to add "One Hour Skirmish Wargames". Excellent set of rules for very small scale skirmish. Love it.
