Hi guys, been looking at some of the near future human forces available, and day dreaming about which army I would like to collect next in that genre, narrowed it down to Khurasans Gota clan, Clear Horizons Hell Divers, Ozzy Ozmy NVL, or GZG RANG, more thinking to do, however whilst my creative idea's are flowing in that genre, I may as well get some work done on an already collected Neo Soviet army, so I have been thinking about the paint scheme, and have decided to go with the Russian Para uniform from COD MW2, a mix of Khakis, black, dark brown and red brown, I want them to have a bit of a mixed equipment feel, like they have had a few different uniform issues and moved to a few different battle ground, high volume lowish tech type troops with a veteran campaign look, thoughts?

Probably closer to how the ones in Crimea look, but like the reddish cmao in your pic above.

I chose Rebel Minis Earth Force Red Guard Space Marines as my NeoSov/RusFed faction: Severny (Northern) Federation's "Polar Knights" Platoon. The year is 2184. Colors for this faction are Vallejo Model Color Offwhite, Buff and Light Gray. I also bought some Tamiya Clear Red, possibly for visors, vision blocks, glowy LEDs, canopies, cowlings and the like, possibly over something like Leadbelcher. I have a couple of other reds, if I want to do insignia or roundels or something.

I have no clue how to paint this small, so no camo on figures, but probably blob camo with whitewash on vehicles. For vehicles I went with Rebel Minis EF Mk.I, II & III HAMR Suits, and tracked Combat Wombat vehicles (as well as another walker, for a command squad scout/recon role). I bought the 21-pack (7 poses), and the command/HW pack (another 8 unique figures). I'll probably do 7-man squads, with initially, a bunch of walkers and just a couple tanks. As the campaign escalates, more assets will be attached to the platoon (as/if/when I can afford it).

The "Polar Knights" Platoon has some combat veterans, has been in the field awhile and is part of an Expeditionary/Maskirovka force, ostensibly working in a Rescue & Recovery role.

The original force was to be a squad of 54mm Tehnolog (Artmaster/Fantasy Fights) Polar Specials, so I repurposed the color scheme from there.

The humidity here is still 92%, so they are still sitting in a box, awaiting the second week of June.

Pics if you're interested.

Different uniform, so some simplified paint scheme: coveralls, armor, belt/pouches, epaulettes, faceshield, goggles. Offwhite, Lt. Grey, Buff, some red, black/leadbelcher, clear red over metallic. Lots of weathering, whitewash, grime, rust, dirt, mud, oil stains, etc. Basing: snow flock/winter tuft. Dirty winter campaign vets.

Campaign starts out with the Atlantic Alliance and Severny Federation acting as "peacekeepers" and "rescuers" when both superstates declare the government of the newly re-independent Greenland (now calling itself Novaborea) to be illegal and void. Troops of the dissolved government, aided by settlers and residents, take up arms against the "invaders". The A.A and SF end up in conflict with each other, while both try to avoid all-out war, when several other factions intervene. Along the way they find a gateway to a science-fantasy milieu, but that's a couple years down the road. Hard "New Cold War" NF/SF for now.

If I were doing them… I'd use Dark Earth for the cloth, Russian armor green for the armor. Maybe a tidbit of red trim.

Retro!

AVAMANGO23 Apr 2014 10:30 p.m. PST

I have thought about this for some time as i also have a Russian/ Neo Soviet force waiting in the wings to be painted, I want to try a two tone drab green scheme for the uniform and helmets with dark gray/black ballistic vest, webbing and boots.

h0unskull24 Apr 2014 2:09 a.m. PST

I just did a tester for my new Neo-Soviets two days ago. I started with suits / VTOL to check if the "orange/green" scheme would work and to get the colours right. I am pretty happy how they turned out.

picture

The infantry will be done in the classical khaki colour of the soviet uniform with highlight of green/orange.

Why orange/red? Hommage to the "red" army and the orange looks a little bit more Scifi and advanced then the orignal red/green theme.

My own collection is leaning heavily toward Eastern Europe with RUSK from Armies Army and Nova Respublik from Khurasan. These will represent two different factions. I also have a force from the New Vistula Legion and plan on fielding Chinese and Japanese troops. A clash of empires.

For the Nova Respublik I used a WW2 Russian Uniform color from Howard Hues that is a greenish khaki with khaki drab (a deeper and browner khaki) for the armor.

The RUSK have a Vallejo khaki grey uniform with violet brown armor. The face mask is light grey with red eye-pieces.

Trojan Points24 Apr 2014 2:55 a.m. PST

Does neo-Chineses count?

I'm thinking a light grey (the colour I'll use to unify all my Terran Alliance forces) with red details a bit like grommet37 and h0unskull (with grey instead of green, totally love what you've done with Khurasan's Corsair Battle Bress, BTW!)

For the vehicles, my not nearly achievable, yet, dream is a three tone camo made of 50% light grey, 25% dark grey and 25% green

Something like the Hip in this post: link

BUT with the edges of the various coloured areas digitalized… Not sure if I'm making sense here: not digital camo like we see everywhere those days, a static fog but broad uniform colour areas with pixelated borders…

All very cool schemes, brilliant painting Hounskull, very striking colours, good use of that VTOL too.

ubique124 Apr 2014 6:18 a.m. PST

I have painted mine more as an after the fall of the Soviet Union force. Some have up to the minute kit, and some are 2nd and 3rd level, very low tech troops. I have used all different companies figures to get a real mixed look.

Some nice painting in this thread.

That video was great, even in German.

Those Khurasan Corsairs look stunning. Mine will be fielded by my Spacer/Returnee faction, if I ever get that far into this project. I only hope to begin to paint something as nice as that. Effective.

Question: What size brushes are you folks using for which bits of these figures?

I'm still learning how to judge the proper consistency of the paint mixture, the opacity, how much to put on the brush, and how much to put on the model, with each "brushload" of paint/medium mix. I'll put it on, think it's too thin, try to correct, and leave brushburn on the next bit. I guess I should be more patient. For "opaque" paint, this stuff is pretty translucent.

Open for suggestions.

I was going to sa as BAMF buy you guys have all done such wonderful paint jobs the joke is flat. Kudos all wonderful and inspirational thanks.
I'm looking at 10mm any ideas for what figures to user guys? . Cheers and happy gaming all.

Johny Boy24 Apr 2014 2:48 p.m. PST

Hi just wanted to say amazing ideas and painting on display here guys, well done all round. Got to love the Neo Sov's, i'm still experimenting with the colour scheme but will hopefully go for a styyle and colour patter of force shown below.

Filmk clip is Kelloid in it's expanded format, hopefully getting backing someday soon for a full film release but to me screams what a futrure dystopian Neo Sov society would lloka nd feel like. AI combat units and NKVD internal secuity.

Figure wise I'll be using a mix of Khurasan Power armour, Control battalion figs for the OKO Conscript militria battalions.

ArmiesArmy Rusk for Spetznaz

And the new Jong – Pac Alliance figs as NKVD regulars.

ArmiesArmy – are yours the cammo ones at the top? I like that cammo, its effective.
Grommet37 – Painting style will be different for everyone, but I tend to only use 2 sometimes 3 brush sizes on 15mm and often only 1, I will use a 3 if I have a lot of 1 colour to do, just to speed up the process, my main brush is usually a 0, I will use that for everything, and sometimes, but not often I will use a smaller brush, for minute detail that I think the tip of a 0 wont do.

h0unskull25 Apr 2014 2:29 a.m. PST

Hi there,

thanks for the kind words… the models above are actually test models for the colour scheme (I wanted to see if the bright orange would work with the greenyellow) and were done quite hasty in an evening.

Colour scheme was not my idea and taken from some models found on Rebel Mikes side for the "URSA mechs" (orignal Micropanzer if I am correct?).

picture
Vehicles and Mechs are working perfectly with this scheme but infantry will be kind of hard I would think..

For NeoSoviet models I look at a certain type of "blockiness". I imagine the models being efficient but a little more crude and simple. What I have planned for more Neo Soviets is the following:

Khurasan Power Armour for heavy assault infantry

picture

Khurasan Armoured Light Utility Vehicle – 4 wheeled light command vehicle

picture

Titan APC from Rebel Miniatures – Troop carrier

picture

URSA mechs from Rebel Miniatures as Tank/Mech hunters (perfect for the orange/green scheme because of the shoulder pads/head guard):

Sons of thunder – Childrens brigage (small models with armour)

Amakudari Strider as big walker for the soviets as support vehicle, tank riders (classical for WW2) will be added here for more "soviet" flair

@Grommet:
Take a look at heresybrush.com (in spanish but the videos also on youtube and work well without language). I learned a lot of vehicle and effect painting on this site. Also astonishing how much detail you can put in 15mm models if you have the time.
In regard of opaque paint: always better are two light covers than one thick… I you have no time to wait until the paint is dry borrow a hairdryer to speed up drying time.

@Nightmare:
Funny I live about 15kms away from the Phantasos guy..

@ArmiesArmy:
Great camouflage scheme… may try to borrow this one for some testers…

Gunner Dunbar25 Apr 2014 2:39 a.m. PST

Children's Brigade? Damn, those Neo Soviets are heartless, they would obviously send them in first to waste enemy ammo, and follow on with more useful infantry?

h0unskull25 Apr 2014 3:01 a.m. PST

Love those cute models… but in a human setting who would fit inside? Either children or disabled vets (like in the DUST setting)…

Gunner Dunbar25 Apr 2014 3:12 a.m. PST

You could use them as genetically modified troops, or humans from a heavy gravity world that are now stunted.

Gunner Dunbar25 Oct 2014 11:39 p.m. PST

Hi guys, an update to this project, some pics of the very WIP figures, let me know what you think of the colour choice I have made, wanted a motley "veterans in mixed gear" look, lots more pics on my blog.

Probably more WW2 than modern, except for Khurasan's DOE dropship. That one I'm painting in a Hungarian scheme.

Gunner Dunbar26 Oct 2014 9:04 p.m. PST

thanks guys, yes a little of a WWII feel.

First rate stuff, as usual. Think they'd look awesome riding in our BTR-3000, one of our most popular vehicles.

Hi Jon, yes I need some of those, they would be perfect.

Great news -- and if you decide to go heavier on the mechanised side we have a scout car/light APC, two different heavy apcs, two different MBTs, a fire support robot, a large power armour suit, and even a massive VTOL gunship!

Or going lighter we have the Strafbat coming soon, penal battalions with minimal equipment. Stay tuned….

Very nice Craig!
