First, I wanted to thank the folks at the Dropship Horizon blog for running their recent painting comp, along with all the fantastic companies that contributed prize support.

I figured, now that the contest was over, I'd post a few pics of my entry. I really love this Khurasan model and I expect I'll paint it a few more times. This is for our group's Hammer's Slammers game at this year's Little Wars convention.

Thanks Dave, glad you like the model. A carrier version is coming this year, as well as Warfighter RoComs (infantry droids) to serve in combined arms forces.

The humans stay in the vehicles in the 1st Research Battalion which, despite its name, fights quite often. They crew the vehicles and in each carrier there are two handlers, called robot wranglers, who give advice and direction to the Warfighters, which are self-aware but can often use human input.

I like the sprayed through camo: what did you use as a mask?

I only ask as I use a piece of nylon netting but I'm looking for alternatives (just to mix it up a bit)

Gentlemen,
Appreciate the kind words. I am 100% down with droid-carrying versions, as well as the droids themselves. All about the droids – the 1st Research Battalion sounds awesome.

I think our group, in general, has the aesthetic sense that vehicles in the future will still suffer the wear and tear of campaign operation. The bluish "carbon scoring" on this model is meant to represent low-orbital deployment, something that would probably naff up your paint job.

John- I had a series of old stencils that I used. I think I may have gotten them at an art supply store. The hexagon pattern seemed to shout "sci-fi!" I have a chequer pattern stencil that I recently bought on Amazon to use on a 28mm Forge World Titan.

Thanks again, guys. I'm starting to get the impression that the 15mm sci-fi community here is a pretty laid back and supportive group of people.

NICE! I really like that paint job. I'm a fan of that model already, and your camo scheme and weathering look fantastic.

Beautiful paintjob, Dave. Really makes a menacing-looking gravtank.

We are collectively deranged, psychotic, irascible, diabolically destructive, and incorrigible, so don't worry, you gonna fit right in in no time flat!evil grin

Yeah, this one instantly caught my eye, I'm glad to lose out to such a brilliant piece of work, I'm going to have to give that camo pattern a try, finding a suitable mask may be difficult, will look in art stores.

I happen to have a VSF themed army and it's tanks are red with brown splatters. Sci-fi can be whatever one wants to it to be. So whilst I do have my drab earth-toned armies, there's nothing wrong with bright colors and even Giant Stompy Robots. Who's to say those bright colors are in fact bright to the species that field them? The bright colors could actually be dark or obscured to their perception of colors. It's your apples to my oranges…

David Johansen07 Mar 2014 3:10 p.m. PST

The fighting had stopped. Word was there was a ceasefire and orders were to stay sharp. Not that the crews of the disabled and burning tanks in the box canyon were actually aware of it. Rebels and Corprate Nations tankers were stitting around waiting for recovery and discipline had slipped, a lot.

"So, what I don't get." a rebel tank jockey was saying, "Is why your guys have bright red tanks?" The corp guy just stared at him. "Is it to cause fear and intimidation or avoid friendly fire? "Say out loud that the United Nations and Corporations can afford to loose a dozen tanks to one of ours?

The Corp smiled. "Nah, the tanks are red for parade dress and are supposed to map surface color to surroundings at up to 200 kilometers per hour and the optic countermeasures paint a nice red decoy holo upto three meters ahead of the tank. It's great in theory, but in practice if you run the targeting computer at the same time the processor slows down so much that the decoy holo overlaps your actual tank most of the time."

Krazy Ivan07 Mar 2014 9:51 p.m. PST

I never understand the 'sci fi tanks need camo' argument. First, it's sci fi, so we're not talking realism. If we were going for hard-ish sci fi I expect most aries wouldn;t want to lug around paint on their ships to give their tanks battlefield specific camo. I figure most tanks would have a standard drab color for all theaters of operations, or be bare metal.
