Like when you clicked on a posting here, and there was some actual verbiage to read in the posting, and perhaps a photo, or three (note – the addition of being able to see photos actually posted in the topics is a big plus, and improvement, over the past).

What I hate is clicking on a posting, which then immediately points me to a link, without any explanation, photo(s), or other detail as to what the topic is about.

For most of those, I usually just hit the back button, without proceeding further, unless I recognize the blog, or have a very strong interest in what I suspect the link might be about.

It seems to be getting worse, of late, especially with the rise of personal blogs.

I don't have a blog, but do occasionally post links to other things, and/or pics, when for some reason, I can't get them to post here.

And yes, I have been guilty of just pointing to a link occasionally, with little explanation, but try to do that as infrequently as possible.

So, it would be nice if people could include at least a sentence or two about what the link is to/for, if you want us to take a look.

So, does this bug anyone else?

Heisler29 Aug 2013 5:36 p.m. PST

It bothers me enough that when I make a post here I always try to include at least a couple of pictures, an explanation of what the heck I'm doing and then a link to my blog.

I figure I should give someone a chance to decide if they want to head over to my blog or not.

Coelacanth29 Aug 2013 5:38 p.m. PST

I don't suppose it bothers me much, but I am far less likely to click through without at least a notion of where I'm going and why. Sometimes I have posted links without comment; usually in the case of potentially controversial topics.

I don't like links with no explanation. Like you, I frequently just don't bother, unless the title of the thread has made it really clear what I'll be getting into. My previous computer was going out for several months, and following links frequently caused problems, so I got into the habit of not clicking.

Ditto. I rarely go forward, if it was worth posting on here about then it was worth posting on here.

I think it's reasonable to "grow the forum" as it were.

I like to post either the best picture, or a couple of the pictures.

I include a link if people would "like to know more"… but I usually include the same text that I would on my blog anyways.

I think people should include at least a photo, or if not available, a nice description that holds up on its own.

If it is interesting enough, it will bring people to your blog (if that's your goal)

Sometimes it amuses me to post a misleading title, and then just a link.
I only do this if it's a joke.
If it's "important", then I expand on it.

It doesn't bother me if it annoys others, because "it's all about ME!" grin

My thoughts on this were posted on my blog some time ago.

For some reason this is my most popular blog post

Yep, I made the same point a few months ago. What is even worse are folks who do the same thing in the Marketplace. Just a link and no explanation. I'm stunned anyone would do that when trying to sell something.

Oh well,

John

Welcome to the modern world.

Mako1129 Aug 2013 6:46 p.m. PST

Oh, don't get me wrong, I enjoy many blogs, links to more info, nice photos, various Yahoo Groups, etc.

I just hate it when the people posting are so rushed that they don't bother to provide at least a sentence to tell you what it's about.

I figure if they can't bother, then neither can I, in most cases.

Yes, you are right combatpainter.

I guess I should be gleeful that the people posting at least have the education to read, use a computer, and to figure out how to actually post a link, given the current path we are on.

I suspect it may only get worse.

Yup. Generally not interested in following links to have to click around for pics elsewhere. If there are some preview pics here, I may check it out. I don't comment on individual blogs, in any event.

On the rare occasion I point to my blog, I try and explain what it's about before posting the link. I don't post photos because the procedure is still too complicated for me. I have done it a couple times, but usually when I am reading and following the directions as I go, and it's not worth the trouble to do that.

I hope that people mention scale in their titles when applicable. Does anyone make 1943 Marines? Is rather pointless until you know the scale the person wants.

It usually good to have some idea of what you're letting yourself in for when you click on a link, but as far as I'm concerned members can post whatever they like however they like, so long as it's not malicious.

I think I am going to miss being young shortly,
but when I was, all my friends and I were unemployed and I had no money – not sure those were good old days, myself.

I miss scurvy. & Mr sage. And the days before most posts were spam.

Sorry, I've just been informed that, thanks to Tylenol[TM], it's actually neuralgia that isn't what it used to be.

As you were.

I am aware of one forum where you will get told off by the moderators for doing this.
It is helpful to have one or two teaser photos so you can see what it's about.

Inkpaduta30 Aug 2013 5:44 a.m. PST

I agree, if you post a link at least give us some idea what is about so one can figure out if it is worth their time/interest to go there.

Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We thought we'd never loose
For we were young and sure to have our way

John the OFM30 Aug 2013 7:26 a.m. PST

Go back to Socrates and Aristotle, and you will find them bitching and moaning about "Kids today!" and how things have gone downhill since they were young.

Cacique Caribe30 Dec 2013 1:25 p.m. PST

Yeah. I have argued about the "link with no explanation" thing before:

TMP link

I'm not quite sure if this conclusion makes any sense or not …

I think it's even worse now that so many people have blogs. The guys with shorter notes on their blog are not likely to give much information on their TMP post (cryptic titles and not even a pic or explanation), without making their tiny blog sound redundant. This applies also to those with stingy photo habits. If all they took and added to their blog was one or two pics, they aren't going to "give it all away" on a TMP post.

So I've come to the assumption that, if they don't want to bother selling me their wares, I'm probably not missing out on much.

I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm going back to bed.

Dan
