Preferably without helmet and armour, and without an attached shield or weapon, does anyone know if any 28mm figure manufacturer make any figures fitting this description? If not Late Roman, Imperial Roman may do.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Many thanks.

Black Tree Late Romans might suit… although they are bearded, and some have Pannonian caps. Some of the Foundry Late Romans would suit, too. Or headswaps on the Foundry unarmoured Caesarians…

Some of the Crusader Late Romans are unarmoured, and come with unattached shields and weapons (I think):

Same goes for Gripping Beast:

The second page of the Gripping Beast line has lots of unarmoured guys wearing hats or bareheaded.

You could also try Musketeer Miniatures:

Foundry auxilia have helmets only, don't know if that's good enough. They are nice figures with dynamic poses. I think I have a bunch of extras of these I might be willing to part with.

Also A&A make some in I think their mid roman line, though maybe in their 4th century line.

Thank you chaps! I shall look into all the suggestions.

Ok GB are great figures and they seem the right one for my small project as well some from Crusader as well. Checked out A&A and there are a few that I could utilise but would require conversion. A couple of the mounted Palmyran's and 4th cent Romans will come in very handy without conversion.

However, I can't find a photo of Musketeer Miniatures RB-06 unarmoured infantry – does anyone have any photos of these unpainted?

Many thanks once again in advance.

Two others to consider…Wargames Factory plastic Numidians and OG Spartacus figures with head swaps and grinding off the shackles.

Thank you religion what a great idea!

The problem I'm coming up against if finding enough sources particularly from around 3rd century onwards……which is proving difficult as I'm sure this when the "classical" look was being replaced with the "tunic and trouser" look and feel…..

I would recommend Wargames Foundry Arthurians. They make lovely unarmoured auxiliaries with a mix of bare heads, hats and helmets. Mine below:

The Musketeer Late Romans are beautiful figures and have separate – oval and rimless – shields.

In size they match perfectly with Gripping Beast ( with attached oval and rimmed- shields. You could also use the Gripping Beast Arthurian infantry with attached- oval, rimless- shields.

Black Tree makes some nice unarmoured Late Romans with separate – rimless- shield. The figures are very nice but the Musketeer oval shields are better. They are available separately to replace the Black Tree ones. Again the match almost perfectly with GB and Musketeer.

West Wind has a small series of Late Roman infantry with separate- oval, rimless shields. All have separate heads too
- standard is bareheaded- but WestWind makes really nice heads with helmets- some slightly dillapidated and perfect for lower grade militia- hats etc. Take a look at their Welsh and Picts too because they are very usefull as Numeri.
Again I would suggest you replace the oval shields with Musketeer ones. This will also make your life a lot simpler if you want to use those great LBM decals. Be prepared to clean up some flash with these figures, especially around the hands, but they are very much worth it.

The new Dark age plastic figures from Gripping Beast.
Combine these with the West Wind heads and again, if you want the Musketeer oval shields, and you've got a very inexpensive Late Roman infantry army. All the shield in the box are round but ther are specific Late Roman decals available from LBM. IMHO it looks great if you mix round and oval shields especially with the same design.

Artizan has a few pack of Late Roman/Arthurian infantry. About the same size as the GB/Musketeer/WestWind/Black Tree ones.
Same comment on the oval shields.

Two of the Crusader pack from their Scots range (dsc01 and 2) can be easily converted to Late Roman lower class infantry. Some very imaginative poses and separate shields.
Still I would replace the shields at least partially with Musketeer ones.

The Foundry Arthurians/Late Romans are great but a bit smaller than all the above mentioned. Great personal dislike are the moulded- on clavii on the tunics.
They mix well with the Newline Design miniatures which are again IMHO superior in accurarcy to the Foundry ones.

@Simon thank you for the suggestion and I will look into the Foundry Arthurians..but the pic didn't work..

@WillieB Fantastic suggestiosn and will look into all those too. I could possibly use Foundry maybe loitering with intent in the background….?! I do like the Musketeer figures, very nice, certainly up there with the best from GB.

Many thanks for the suggestions everyone, been very useful and now the hard part…..
