I would like include an angry mob for my year of the 4 emperors game. Does anyone make civies armed with axes, stones, etc?

mghFond12 Feb 2012 1:04 p.m. PST

Year of the four emperors, ohh, great idea for a game. That was a fascinating time in Roman history, good luck!

I know OG has a medieval looking mob, not sure of any company which makes the same for Roman times.

I don't know of any specifically but the Wargames Factory Numidians and Perry Ansar both spring to mind for some easy to convert plastics. I'm sure there are manufacturers offering packs of farm implements that you could use.

Edit Essex Miniatures, packs X25 and X52, peasant weapons and tools.

The Foundry has a few packs of Roman civilians…

Look for Spartacus figures which are mainly armed civilians.
I have Aventine, 1st Corp and Gripping Beast, there is also a Old Glory line.
I also use Crusaders Irish Women and Children.
I have not yet gotten the Foundry packs.

1st Corps have some nice looking Roman plebs in their slave revolt range. I might well be picking some up myself soon.

Good luck!

The Young Guard12 Feb 2012 2:12 p.m. PST

Cheers for the help chaps!

I have converted OG Spartacus figures as angry, Roman mobs. Demanding work cutting/grinding off the shackles. Some coarse paper soaked in glue for robes helps the look.

Irregular Miniatures do tunic-wearing camp followers carrying various tools, billets of firewood etc that would be suitable for Roman civvies. Not particularly angry-looking but might be useful to bulk up a crowd.
Cheers
Paul.

religion, I have been looking for pics of the OG Spartacus figures. Can you post some?

I've been toying with a similar idea. Not having much luck finding figures that don't look like they're fresh off the battlefield.

I too would like to see some pix of the OG figures. I can't believe they aren't on the manufacturer's site.

I use first corps, warlord and OG figs for my wild mob!

poiter5012 Feb 2012 9:04 p.m. PST

What rules do you intend using for mobs/rioters?

I have all the Foundry Roman Civilians that I intend to use for that type of game, so will look forward to what you come up with. About half of the Foundry packs are suitable for mobs.

IMHO , the O.G. slave revolt range is pretty good. Also Foundry has some slaves for the fields and wine orchads that look good! I would go with the O.G. range for the price. Also some the the plastics would work! Mike Adams

I can post pictures, but it may be a couple of days. I'm not scheduled in my office/workshop until next Monday. (But, I'll try to get images sooner.)

I was going to use them for war and conquest, or come up with a set of skirmish rules for them. I stole the idea from Simon Scarrows latest book

Check "Steve Barber Models" he has Roman civilians from his Gladiator range that might fit your needs.

religon13 Feb 2012 2:08 p.m. PST

The Steve Barber figures are very nice. They are noticeably smaller than most others mentioned in this thread. I'll put one in the picture when I take it.

religon14 Feb 2012 8:23 a.m. PST

The OG Scartacus figures are in the middle and to the left. The grey heads come from the Wargames Factory plastic Numidians set as does the lone plastic figure. The head swaps replace helmeted figures.

The two Roman merchants to the extreme right are Foundry. The two just to the interior are Steve Barber figures.

Those "Barber" figures definitely are smaller. Thanks for posting the pictures.

The Young Guard14 Feb 2012 12:35 p.m. PST

yeah cheers for those mate! Very interesting!

MiniatureWargaming dot com14 Feb 2012 4:02 p.m. PST

Thanks for those photos.

What sort of heads did the OG figures have before you swapped them out for the plastics?

religon17 Feb 2012 11:34 a.m. PST

The swapped heads sported helmets.

The dominate kind was the Imperial Gallic.
