It would be so cool if someone came up with piles of tech junk, like broken computers and other advanced devices.

I don't know of anyone that sells them, so DIY seems to be the only remaining option.

So …

1 – Has anyone made piles of futuristic junk???

2 – What images did you use as inspiration?

Here's an interesting one: link

Here's another example:

3 – What "tech stuff" did you include in your piles?

4 – Got pics of what you made?

Thanks,

I have two in the process of being assembled. Lots of odds and ends from the bits box, all mounted with hot glue on a defunct CD. Groundwork was liberally coated with my pot of "mixed leftovers" that consists of the tailings and left overs from basing overspill, stuff that I emptied from the bottom of storage boxes all blended together. They will get a black basecoat and then drybrusing with greys and rust colurs, with individual bits picked out as nessecary. Then liberal application of rust pigments and oil stain.

I have one in progress with hopes to do more. Here is a quick snap of it.

picture

I started with a Mechwarrior Clix model pulled apart and laid out as a wreck. Then I piled up bit of balsa, bits from models, even some mtal fittings and such around it. I then surrounded it with a modest bit of sand and painted the base "rust" color all over it. Individual, more interesting colors will be painted over the different parts.

Well yeah, and pretty much at your behest, Dan. I sculpted a variety of small junk piles (a mix of building materials and equipment parts) for the Startown Slums range, which sold for a couple of years through Battle Works Studios before they closed up. Monday Knight Productions has the line now, but they don't seem to be selling the little scrap piles with the main buildings. I know they should have the molds and masters (having packed them myself) so maybe if people pestered them about it they'd be put back into production.

Heck, if there was interest I could bash together a larger range of similarly-styled junkpiles in a variety of sizes. It was on the to-do list back when I still owned the range myself.

Anyone curious as to what they looked like can see a painted set over on the blog post here (scroll down a bit):

Ah sorry, I am working on some 6mm ones for my Junkers.
No crazy big 15mm stuff though!

;)

War Monkey22 Apr 2013 6:08 a.m. PST

You can check out different HO scale stuff, side of the track stuff, quite a few out there have different piles of stuff, I'm sure you could add more bits to them.
like this could be new equipment coming in at the shipping yard

1) I have in 6mm.
2) Not inspired by photos/images.
3) I included broken electronics innards, coiled copper wires, paperclips, broken model car bitz, some Mechwarrior Clix bitz, plastic card shapes, some drafting lining adhesive stickers and some plastics from consumer goods with interesting textures.
4) No pictures.

To echo what others have said, Mechwarrior clix make *great* fodder for tech-y terrain. I've used chopped-up clix for my 28mm junk piles…I'm sure they'll work great for 15mm. SUPER CHEAP, too.

Hope this will help, just add to other piles

I really like my set from the original Startown Slums – hopefully they become available again.

In the meantime, this guy has a bunch of HO-scale model railroad junk piles at decent prices. Not very futuristic, but it should get the job done. link

@ clkeagle, Thanks for the link

Cacique Caribe22 Apr 2013 9:36 a.m. PST

Clkeagle,

I never got to see the ones you made and had produced for the Startown Slums. I really wish I had.

Were these the ones?

Wow. When I ordered the full 5-building set, I never knew that junk piles were available for Startown!

I really hope they are produced and sold by the new owner:

They would be extremely useful above and below ground:

Wow. When I ordered the full 5-building set, I never knew that junk piles were available for Startown!

They were part of the second wave, which had three kits, two of which (the ones illustrated above) came with some junk/scrap/debris as extras – mostly because I'd made the buildings a little smaller than the 1st wave stuff was and we thought some added bits would sweeten the deal and help sales.

Cacique Caribe22 Apr 2013 11:26 a.m. PST

Chief,

Ooops. I didn't pay close attention to the earlier post and gave CLKeagle the credit that should have gone to you. So sorry!

Those were magnificent sets, though I was only able to get the first wave.

Rich made 'em… I just own a set. grin

Were these the ones?

It's the bits in the last two pictures. The piles in the first two are just individual GZG barrels and containers that I mounted on scraps of plasticard. Which, incidentally, is another quick way to make scatter terrain.

Another option is to rummage through the bits section on Ramshackle Games' website. SpaceJacker made great use of some of those bits – many aren't scale-specific. link

I did some junk for my scrapyard with my Black dog salvage co building. Its made up from a chopped up R/C helicopter that my brother-in-law had(plus a few other bits) I still need to get some junk piles done, I'm glad you reminded me.

Only pic I could find of my "trash heap"

picture

The garbage bags are kernels of popcorn.

I cannot say that it is done as I keep it next to my desk and add left over bits of greenstuff on it as I go. I have sculpted a few bits and bobs on it and have topped it off with an assortment of random metal bits – broken calculator, plastic bits, screws, old computer bits, etc

Some day I might just paint it up and start a second one!

Popcorn Kernels- brilliant!

Add some wires and a few bites and that locamotive engine could look like some old spaceship engine or at best part of one
