The topic subject line says it all, really. Does anyone know the original publication date for the Irregular Miniatures Ancients Rules, the ones included with the 6mm Ancient Battlepack?

Many thanks,
Scott

Do you mean the RuleBox? My copy is somewhere around here, but I can say they were certainly from very early 90's.I remember a review in the Courier, and I'm pretty sure I got my copy around 92 or 93.Sorry I cant give you anything more definite right now.I've only played them a handful of times, but did like them.A friend of mine, who was more familiar with such things, stated they had a "WRG" feel to them.

That's exactly what I needed. Thanks very much, gents! thumbs up

To satisfy my own private intellectual curiosity, for some time I have been compiling a list of commercial rulebooks for classical ancient miniatures battles, including the title, author, publisher, publication date, and thumbnail pic of the original cover for each. Thus far, my list includes some 77 entries, dating from 1969 to the present. The Irregular Miniatures Ancients publication date has managed to escape my best internet search-engine skills, so I greatly appreciate the info.

To the same end, would anyone happen to know where I could find a small digital image of the cover for the 1st edition of the Irregular Miniatures Ancients Rule Box, Alea Iacta Est by Justin Taylor, the Archon supplement for Piquet by Bob Jones, or the Ancient Warfare rules by Terry Gore? These also have managed to elude me, so far.

Thanks again,
Scott

Do you have Shieldbearer on your list? If I can help let me know Alot of Gaul.

@ Marcus – I'm not familiar with that one, and a web search yielded no results. Is it a commercially-produced miniatures rulebook for mass battles set during the classical Greco-Roman era?

Hoplite Warfare by B.Adams & T.Clarke 1980?
Sub titled :- Wargames rules and army lists for the Classical age (650-330) in Greece, Italy, Asia.
Simple Ancient Rules by G.Gush 1980?

I've got those listed already, but thanks… and do keep 'em coming! grin

The earliest I have are by Ed Smith – but I suspect that is the 1969 rules you mentioned.

@Tony (GildasFacit) – Is that the WRG 1st edition War Games Rules ancients set, co-authored with Phil Barker and Bob O'Brien? If so, then indeed that is the 1969 rulebook I mentioned. If not, I would love to hear more!

Cheers,
Scott

Shieldbearer was commercially published and covered mass battle. It ran to two editions I believe.

Thanks, bobm1959. Not wanting to stray any further OT than I have already, I started a new thread for discussion of the Shieldbearer rule set: TMP link

A lot of Gaul- there is no actual cover for the Rules Box-it is literally in a jewelry style box with a green cover. There is a folded sheet of paper that gives some instructions and basing schemes. The actual rules are laid out on colored, typewritten style note cards which are meant to be flipped through during the turn sequence.Rules on the front, examples on the back.

Thanks for the additional information, skinkmasterreturns.

No it isn't that though there are some mechanisms in the rules that make it a possible pregenitor.

I have them stored away so may take me a day or do to find them.

That sounds very interesting, Tony. There's no rush, I'll look forward to hearing more in due course.

I got the date wrong

Published August 1967 by the British Model Soldier Society – Wargame Section.

Title : Rules for Ancient Wargames – pre-gunpowder

Author : Edward P Smith

Cost : 7/- (that is now £0.38 GBP) & available from John Tunstill

Credits for extra info/suggestions etc from : Tony Bath, Bob O'Brien, Phil Barker and others.

Reads like a list from Wargaming history

Also contains amendments and corrections up to the Wargames championships of 1968 – which is where I think I bought them. 7 shillings was a lot of money for a lad just finishing 6th form way back then.

That's awesome – many thanks, Tony! grin

I don't want to put you out, but is there any chance of obtaining a thumbnail-sized pic of the cover?

Cheers,
Scott

The cover is just a roneo copy of a typed page with the Title and contents listed. That is how rules were produced in 1967 – if you were lucky, some were hand-written.

If you still want one then e-mail me though the Tiny Tin Troops website.
