Hi all,

I'm looking for what I'd consider "realistic" near future or sci-fi infantry – stuff that could exist ten, twenty, thirty years from now. Hard-armor, improved personal protection, possibly powered armor (realistic); but as realistic as possible. Bullets, possibly man-portable lasers (with huge support power packs), no flamethrowers or wackiness.

This is what I've gotten so far to use:

- Urban War Viridians
- Pig Iron Troopers
- Defiance Games UAMC
- Copplestone Assault Troopers

That's kind of the level I'm looking for. The Viridians and Pig Iron are wearing hard armor – not powered, just increased protection – and have assault rifles. The Defiance and Copplestone have ballistic vest/lighter armor, assault rifles.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to add onto this list? I'm looking for one, possibly two more ranges that would mix well together with these.

Thanks!

While rather bulky, the Rezolution CSO Troopers also fit the bill.

Judge Doug05 Sep 2012 2:01 p.m. PST

Hmm, the Hasslefree do look nice but there's not enough variety for what I'm looking for (squads and squads worth).

I did own some Rezolution figures but would up getting rid of them as the bulkiness was a turn-off.

Those Frank Hammond figures do look pretty amazing.

Any good shots of those Denizen mid tech figures next to other popular 28mm ranges?

PatrickWR05 Sep 2012 2:18 p.m. PST

The Pig Iron support weapons in particular will match the look you're going for. Their weapon teams are two-man affairs…sufficiently bulky.

Judge Doug05 Sep 2012 2:20 p.m. PST

Patrick, yup, I've got a ton of Pig Iron stuff including their support teams (the two-part laser cannon is especially in the vein of what I'm looking for).

I did own some Rezolution figures but wound up getting rid of them as the bulkiness was a turn-off.

They did go from Pulp SF (Armor? We don't use armor!) to looking like they are wearing two complete sets each. I have some of both and will be painting them differently.

Heresy looks great, the only thing they're missing is some anti-tank weaponry.

Those Greatcoats look cool but a little too WW1 or Grimdark for what I'm going for.

Frank's soldiers are pretty much perfect. Except the price :) I may just have to give in and buy 'em.

dam040905 Sep 2012 4:09 p.m. PST

If price is an issue then Defiance look good.

recon3505 Sep 2012 4:13 p.m. PST

How does one go about purchasing Frank's Toybox miniatures?

Judge Doug05 Sep 2012 4:17 p.m. PST

Yeah, I have Urban War Viridians, Pig Iron Troopers, Defiance Games UAMC, and Copplestone Assault Troopers already, just hoping to add more to the near-future realistic style that those four ranges are.

Frank's are definitely on the right track.

Had to view in Web rather than Mobile to see order details for Frank's

Doug,

you're aware that Defiance has German panzergrenadiers enroute:

Hope this helps!

BlackWidowPilot,
I've seen the previews and some shots of the Panzergrenadiers from people who got some freebies with their Bugs order and I've been pretty underwhelmed by the mushy detail and static posing options. Plus I'm still waiting for the Bugs I paid for 3 months ago from Defiance, which started 'shipping' before July 4.

Re Franks. I think you email him. Specifics are on the site.

Wolfprophet05 Sep 2012 11:16 p.m. PST

Thanks for pointing those guys out Dentatus. Those are some pretty cool figures.

AndrewGPaul06 Sep 2012 2:15 a.m. PST

You know, the Imperial Guard Cadians might fit the bill, too. OK, so they call those guns "lasguns", but they look an awful like a bullet-firing gun. The specialist energy weapons are big, beefy things, and the heavy lascannon have a big power pack. There's the Imperial eagle and skull insignia to deal with, of course. Just don't use the chainsword arms. grin

No prob, Wolfprophet. I like 'em too, but am resisting their siren song.

Judge Doug06 Sep 2012 7:33 a.m. PST

I did have some Cadian plastics but got rid of them. They were just too bulky. I think the Frank's toybox figs will be my next purchase. I hope Heresy introduces some SAWs, mortars, grenade launchers, radio operators, and anti-tank weapons to their line so I can order those!

Thanks all!

Scroll a bit down, its beyond that Leviathan.

They are a mix between SF and modern, though – with leaning on the SF.

Lion in the Stars06 Sep 2012 9:41 a.m. PST

I think I mentioned them before, but the Haqqislam and Ariadna troops from Infinity are certainly near-future in appearance.

Only problem is the pricetag, Infinity minis aren't really priced for squad-based games. Well, that and the limited number of poses, which is also an artifact of the game design.

Judge Doug06 Sep 2012 12:10 p.m. PST

I am tempted to support the Dreamforge Eisenkern but they're a bit too Grimdark/sci-fantasy for my taste. But honestly I guess I could do some head swaps.

maybe they'll look better in person. I'll still probably buy a set just to see.

Greg B06 Sep 2012 1:53 p.m. PST

Those "panzer grenadiers" look a little iffy…bit of a let down from the graphics.

Puster Sponsoring Member of TMP06 Sep 2012 2:57 p.m. PST

These poses are TERRIBLE, but from my experience that is from REAL bad assembly. A problem that (oddly enough) many WGF sets have, too. Its like they do not have experienced modellers at hand…

Lee Brilleaux Fezian06 Sep 2012 8:02 p.m. PST

I'm biased as all get out, since I'm one of the partners in Defiance Games, so you can bear that in mind.

I've assembled sixteen of the Panzergrenadiers and painted eight of them. The detail is sharp and assembly very straightforward. The poses are, of course, what you make them, but I had no problems in creating natural positions.

I have no idea who put the figures in the examples shown, but I think he should stop.

Meanwhile, here's my own effort. As so often, my pictures are bad bad bad -- but I'm not claiming to be the official photographer. Proper photos of better painted models will follow.

Judge Doug06 Sep 2012 8:19 p.m. PST

Those do look better. I'll get a box after my bugs finally get delivered.

So other than my initial list, either the Defiance Panzergrenadiers, Frank's awesome infantry, and the Dreamforge guys with different heads.

byram106 Sep 2012 8:28 p.m. PST

I thought Germans were static and ungainly in real life?

Lee Brilleaux Fezian06 Sep 2012 9:00 p.m. PST

Let's see how this one comes out.

One clear, everyone else fuzzy. Par for the course for me --
