Which version? There have been several Star Wars RPGs, all currently OOP. There were hundreds (thousands?) of prepainted plastic minis for the WotC version, metal figs for West End (and a handful for WotC), and IIRC there's a Spanish company making high-end licensed metal minis of the movie characters.

I'd use Blasters & Bulkheads for Star Wars minis gaming myself.

Hey Chief: Thanks for the link! I might check them out myself.

I'd go with the plastic, WotC minis, which are prepainted, if you are just starting out.

You can find them on eBay, and at some of the Collectible Minis Stores still. Can't think of the names of the latter right now, but someone will be along shortly with that info, and/or links.

The CMG minis come with stat cards, which you can use with D20s, for gaming.

FUBAR is free, and there are several rules options on the Forge of War Yahoo Group that you might consider, in the files section. Their rules are quite good.

For bigger battles, the Star Wars Miniature Battles rules, and the supplements should be considered. They have some RPG rules and supplements too, which you can use as well.

If running campaigns, and/or for more interesting, or solo play, you might want to check into the Mythic GM Emulator as well. That was recommended to me awhile back, and is a superb tool for aiding in story telling, and/or in coming up with yes/no answers to your questions, and twists and turns to your gaming plots.

For the RPG part, I'd go with West End Games 2nd Edition. Revised Edition if possible. They're common on eBay. The later RPG attempts weren't very good (IMHO). We're still doing Star Wars RPG weekly here from when the first edition came out.
FUBAR and the plastic WotC for the miniatures part would be my suggestion. For the RPG I usually use metal 15mm from a variety of manufactures to go with old Traveller Starship Deck Plans.

Opinions on the quality of RPGs aside, if you do decide to go with the WEG D6 version, I would definitely consider picking up some of the WotC SAGA sourcebooks for whatever era you want to play, assuming you do not want to play in the Rebellion or immediate post-Rebellion era. They often have a nice overview of the era, personalities, special equipment, ships, etc. Basically a lot of fodder to detail the campaign, or convert to whatever ruleset you want to use.

Also do not ignore Wookieepedia.com, fantastic source for all things Star Wars.

Damon.

The Spanish company (Dark Knight) is no longer selling their miniatures. There is a thread here about the fact.

Miniature Market and Troll and Toad are two online sellers of the WotC collectable miniatures. They also have some of the rulebooks for the SAGA edition of the RPG, but none of the important books. You'll have to go to eBay for them.

There is also Noble Knight Games who have some of the miniatures and rules for all the varieties of Star Wars RPGs and Miniature games. You'll have to take a look there to see what they have.

I've purchased from all of them without problems.

Lots of people seemed to have liked the SAGA edition the most. From what I hear it is very cinematic and captures the excitement and feel of the movies the most. I've not played it though or really had a chance to read through them as I just recently picked the books up.

I have a soft spot for the WEG D6 version myself. The way they produced the books with advertisements from the various Star Wars companies like Sienar Fleet Systems and recruitment posters for the Imperial Navy just really struck a chord with me. I also picked them up at a time when I was very impressionable and those are what I think of when ever I think of Star Wars RPGs. The 2nd edition revised is definitely the best of the WEG versions. Just be aware that lots of the sourcebooks were updated for the 2nd edition so the stats are different for all the characters, equipment, and vehicles. If you get the 1st edition ones they are playable. The 2nd edition rule book had conversion rules to convert stats, but the revised edition didn't have them. Most of the Galaxy Guides and the Imperial and Rebel Source books are the ones that were updated. None of the adventures were updated from 1st to 2nd edition, but they were reprinted in some compilation books called Classic Adventures. There were five of those reprint books. There are some great adventures there.

I played the most with the WotC D20 Revised Edition though. That's not to say I thought it was better than the WEG version. There were things I did and didn't like about it. I still don't like the initiative and combat movement system of D20, especially when it comes to vehicles. That is my biggest complaint of the system.

I've played the WotC D20, D20 Revised, and D20 Saga versions of the RPG. All of these suffer from movement optimization lag that rewards players who master it, and hinder those who don't.

Of the three, I enjoyed D20 Revised the most because it fine tuned some of the mechanics from D20, and didn't take dice out of the players hands like D20 Saga did.

Skill challenges based on fixed values? Here's your hat, hit the bricks, bub.

Overall, if I wanted to play Fantasy Space Opera, I'd opt for D20 Modern and the Cyberscape/Future/Urban Arcana books, just to get away from the fixed paths for Jedi paths. YMMV
