You can all blame this idea on Cacique Caribe

original thread is here: TMP link

I've been toying with a new product. The idea is to add scifi details to any flat surface for cheap. Foam core, hardboard, or even lasercut MDF corridors.

Camera batteries were dead so sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.

This is the raw material applied to hardboard. I've already tested acrylic. It takes paint surprisingly well. It has enough of a raised detail to allow you to dry brush and weather it.

I'd show pics of my attempt to paint the first prototype but I've learned the hard way that if you have not eaten in 4 days due to illness your hands are not as steady as you'd think :)

I'll prime this one and try again.

The plan is to release several styles of walls and floors. You can mix and match them to get unique looks. I also plan to experiment with other elements. This material comes in some very nice florescent colors. I'll be experimenting with layering the designs to create glowing lights or details. The best part is you'll be able to paint it and then remove the top layer to revel the unpainted color.

We will probably release something along the lines of simple Scifi shapes for those DIY guys out there who want to add details to scratch build stuff.

This solves several problems with the current sets of MDF based terrain. Etching these details with a laser gets rather expensive. It is also inset into the material. The few times I have tried it have proved to be difficult to paint.

Still working on a cool name for it. I have a lot of R&D to do yet. Application of the details is kinda hard. It will require some time and a very sharp razor blade. Right now I'm working on how to make sure the application is square to the material.

I'm estimating that you could do the walls of a small facility (3-5 rooms) for around $5. USD $20 USD-$30 might get you an entire compound with floors and walls.

Sounds and looks interesting…

From the pics, it looks pretty nice.

What is the material made of?

I can see, as you mention, getting it applied so it is square to the sides will be the real challenge.

Making it compatible with the different items it will be glued to, and/or with the glue itself may be an issue too.

Is there still a possibility that you could produce a set of neon signs using this material?

I LOVE THAT LOOK!!!

Awesome. Now there's finally something to turn "naked" corridor walls into something this sleek tech look:

Sounds like it may be some of that fluorescent acrylic, so yes, you could probably scrape away the paint to spell out words, etc., using it.

Hopefully, the lighting experiments will work as well, for some nice colorful effects.

haha @Cacique Caribe that is the exact image I used as a reference.

@AVAMANGO Yes that would be the plan. A florescent back with the black on top should allow me to make some interesting signs.

It has it's own adhesive. You have to be careful of bubbles when applying but I think that will not be as big because I'll be shrinking the basic unit. That piece was about a foot long. Production will probably be several 2" long pieces.I need to work out the pattern so you can attach them without seams.

Looks promising.

Fantastic news, so the black over lay will be more or less a stencil with pre cut lettering and all that needs to be done is pick them off to reveal the florescent backing. :)

I'm ok :) Things have been a bit crazy. I got suckered into running a convention last weekend and the big sale this week has me buried.

I tried to paint the wall but it didn't come out that good. Flaw in the design. Some of the bits are to small and beyond my painting skills to make them look right. I also didn't thin the florescent paint I used on the "lights" so it came out clumpy and I could get it to work after that.

I ordered some GameCrafter corridor sections and a room. Still waiting on those. He must be swamped like I am from his big sale. Once I get those, I'll tailor the design to fit perfectly and have them cut again.

I've got a few hundred potential ideas in my head for this new product line. I'm waiting on a deal to go through so I can have the capitol to get the equipment I need to do it.

I'm also about to sign the papers on a laser cutter. Yah I know it's crazy that I don't have one yet… I plan to go crazy once it gets here. I'll be able to prototype a lot faster and do smaller print runs. You can expect more components for the Barrier Fences as well as some star ship bridge style furniture.

I plan to start combining laser cutting and this decal (for lack of a better term) material. I'll probably start with stupid cheap hardboard roads. They will be sold with the decal sheet. I don't think we are going to get into full buildings like Gamecrafters but we will be doing more terrain.

Sweet. When do i get the protypes to experiment with?
