Over on the Steve Dean Painting site, it has been reported that Peter Connolly has passed away.

I'm sorry to hear this.

I spent hours looking at the pictures in his "Greece and Rome" book when I was in High school. It is still the best single "wargames" book that I have.

CooperSteveOnTheLaptop07 May 2012 4:11 a.m. PST

Thought he died a couple of years ago?

Maddaz11107 May 2012 4:22 a.m. PST

Sad day for ancient wargamers.

Another of the list of greats I have met, chatted with, and cannot discuss things with again.

I can remember him arguing with me because I had editied his contribution on a TV programme, and saying I had made him a laughing stock. I responded that he had me confused with someone else, I was a civil servant, and not a BBC tv editor, and that we then had a friendly conversation over warm drinks on a cold day in the English summer.

Died 2nd May. His Greece and Rome at War is still a superb primer for anyone interested in Classical warfare.

Oh hell. That's a great shame.

That is Terrible news. His book Greece And Rome at War is one of my favorites.

Peter's death is a loss to historians also and he was a champion of experimental archeology. RIP.

WillieB07 May 2012 7:21 a.m. PST

Really sad. Love his books and will cherish them even more now.

A great loss. He used to be a regular at the Roman Army School in Durham (UK); his passion and love of what he did was obvious in his lectures. He had a great sense of humor as well.

That's very sad to hear.

JJartist07 May 2012 9:55 a.m. PST

A sad loss for us all.

I have most of his books and still use them. A loss for illustration and history.

Oh Bugger07 May 2012 11:06 a.m. PST

Sad news indeed.

Respect.

A great and prolific contributor to out understanding of arms and equipment of the Greek and Roman world. A key figure.

Sad to hear that. We will miss his entusiastic works. I will have to to take a look at the Odysseus book I have again. I liked his interview in In Search of the Trojan War. Loved looking at that model of a Dendra warrior. Here he is at 31:00 YouTube link

RIP Mr. Connolly. Dean

My wife & I met him very briefly at a Kirby Hall reenactment event – he was dressed as a Makedonian phalangite at the time!

But I was convinced he'd died a few years back?

charliemike08 May 2012 5:50 a.m. PST

Very sad news, I still have my copies of "Greece and Rome at War" and of "The Roman Army" in the bookshelfs, I read them so many times that they risk to fall apart.
I have to thank him for many hours of reading (and for improving my English).

History in Action?

I also had a chat with him there, one year – he was doing book signings and stuff. Nice man.

He was dressed in modern clothes when I spoke to him but that doesn't mean he didn't change into costume over the weekend …

He was a confident advocate that reconstructing things was the way to understand them and he managed to gain respect for that approach. An important contribution.

His work and life will shine on. Thanks for the link Dean.

"History in Action?"

Possibly in 1999… or close to that year

My wife first felt our foetal daughter during a cannon salvo at that event… that would have been '98, we were with Wulfingas 500 AD at the time. Happy days

desmondo11 May 2012 9:52 a.m. PST

Such a shame to hear. His Roman Army book was one of my favourite books as I was growing up. The book was inspiring.

CooperSteveOnTheLaptop11 May 2012 2:17 p.m. PST

He seemed a wise happy person. Probably dealing well with being dead. I was aquainted with Rick Scollins too.

Fireymonkeyboy11 May 2012 2:47 p.m. PST

Crap. I had some of his books as a kid.
