I've noticed a few folks around here who, like me, have started up 10mm ACW projects. For me, at least, 10mm is something of a new scale for a period where 15mm has appeared dominant.

What is your primary scale (or size!) for ACW gaming? Specifically ground combat gaming, so keep your ironclads and hot air battle balloons outta this.

it was 15mm which I kept for 25 years, then 6mm for F&F for a couple, then I moved to 10mm which I love PENDRAKEN has been superb, now I have bought 28mm as an investment and to play regimental games.

So in essence I live all the scales but now prefer the 28mm.

Definitely 6mm

Out of curiosity, what does this mean?

25/28mm only

28MM figures appreciate in value. Or at least they will keep doing so with the rising prices of heavy metals. Should prices drop on raw materials, we will see a reversal of this trend. Having said this, plastics may erode the value of metals in the future.

15mm would be my preferred scale. I do like 10mm though. Having said this, ACW is probably the perfect era for 6mm figures as you are really talking about mass battles here without intricate uniforms.

With the availability of Old Glory, Battle Honours and Blue Moon in 15mm and at substantial discount, it makes 15mm very attractive.

10mm for any big scale battle, but I do want a small 28mm force, a division pr. side just to get some nice big figures.

cwbuff10 Feb 2012 12:14 p.m. PST

15 but I would go with 10 if starting over again.

I have mass armies in 15mm.

I've recently taken up both 25mm and 28mm. Because I ran across figures I really-really like in both of these scales. The Perry plastic 25mm (and some supplementary metal figs) for one-flat-is-a-brigade gaming (Volley & Bayonet for starters) and the Very Uncivil War 28mm stuff for single-based skirmish gaming, maybe mixed with some Blue Moon Hillbillies and other big characterful figs.

I game the ACW in two scales. My 10mm figs are mounted for Volley and Bayonet. I have about 12 Corps painted.

My tactical level games are done with 1/72 or 22mm figs. I use Field of Battle for them.

Thanks,

John

15mm, that's what I started with when I was a kid just learning how to paint. And it's the scale I always go back to.

I started over with ACW in 10mm with 10 High 25 years ago. Never looked back.

15mm for big battles, 25/28mm for portions of large
battles.

Calico Bill10 Feb 2012 4:10 p.m. PST

6mm.I started out in 15mm, but now they are seldom used. 6mm minis,6-8 to a base, gives a great 'large battle' look.

You left out 18mm … Ever since I saw my first Blue Moon 18mm, I swore I'd never ever go back to puny little 15mm's!!

I have had 15mm for over 30 years, they spent much of that time in storage. Recently got them back out and rebased for DBA/Humberside. I bought 10m from GHQ about 5 years ago, they are still in the blisters. I feel they will give a good looking large battle game. The sculpts are pretty good.

My group plays in 15 and 25/28 depending on the game.

28mm.

I would LOVE to be able to go with 15mm or even 20mm, to get more minis on my table (4' x 6') and be able to cover larger battles. But I HATE painting anything that small. Tried to get into Flames of War and just could NOT do it.

I enjoy painting at 28mm level, and anything smaller, just forget it.

I have lots of 15mm but, if I were to start over, I'd go with 10mm or 6mm for a better "mass effect" look.

Use to own 15mm, but sold off my colection several years ago.

When I started re-building I was told 10mm is the way to go and it was available locally for me.

If I get back into them, I'm thinking of the new 10mm prepainteds.

TKindred11 Feb 2012 6:08 a.m. PST

25/28mm scale. The rest are just too small for me to paint, and I like the animation & detail of the larger minis.
