In Warlord Games' Hail Caesar ruleset, players are required to track casualties. This can be done with pen and paper, or by using markers (dead/wounded figures, discarded shields, markers or tokens). How do you track casualties in Hail Caesar? * dead figures * wounded figures * discarded shields * markers * tokens * pen and paper * other * I don't play Hail Caesar |

Don't play, but if I did I would use one (or more) of the first three options. That's what I do in most games – looks way better than counters/markers. |

I started out by using red plastic tokens, but I am now painting up a batch of 'discarded' shields to use as casualty markers. I agree that it makes for a much more aesthetically pleasing battlefield. |

I have a box with 1,2 and 3, but when I can't find it I use 4 (casualty caps or rings most of the time but sometimes little coloured disks). What's the difference between a 'marker' and a 'token'? |

What's the difference between a 'marker' and a 'token'? A marker has a label? A token has a shape or color that is supposed to remind you of
something. |

Probably dice. Maybe one casualty figure with dice for additional ones |

I use casualty figures when I can find appropriate ones . When I can't find casualties discarded shields, other bits of kit, small rocks, and little resin skulls have all been used. I don't like to use dice as it is too easy to pick them up and roll them by accident. |

You need quite a few markers if you consider that a typical game has a dozen or more units on each side that each can take 6 hits, so I use dice to mark hits and tokens to mark disorder. |

Years ago, I saw a game where the casualties were recorded on dice that fit inside hollow barrels, and tree stumps. All you could see was the top of the dice for the result. To change it, you just shook the die out rotated and put it back. It was both practical and aesthetically pleasing. |

Prefer games with limited marker requirements. Keeping the open marker information current, with the correct unit, and not in the game photographs (unless blended into the tabletop terrain) detracts from a well written rule set. M |

This came up recently on our Forum, with one chap making casualty markers with built in dice compartments: link |

Dead guys. For any games that require casualty or similar tallies. FoG, Armati, AMW, HC
I made up loads for Armati, and it was one of the most useful build sessions (pays dividends in many different rules sets) Phil |

I used dead guys for BP 'cos it only went up to three. I have had to use Turny-things for HC as it goes up to 6 (or even 12 in theory) but find them too large. I am almost certainly gonna end up with dice. The number of markers on the table is my sole problem with this otherwise excellent family of games. Pat |

I use dice that are smaller and differently coloured to the ones I use for rolling. I use one in base contact for the running total of hits and another adjacent to that for hits inflicted in the current move and then remove it and adjust the running total when the results of combat have been adjudicated. |

I use markers. Small half inch square markers, with a white skull on a red background and a number superimposed. The number is eithr 1, 2 or 5. |

'Markers' would cover it. Spare weapons (1 hit) or shields (3 hits) each on a terrained square 20*20mm base. |

To date paper and pencil but two games hardly counts. Markers if we look like playing it a lot. x42 |

Haven't played Hail Caesar yet, but I usually like to use casualties to track losses or status. But that's ideally. Since I don't always have casualty figures, I often just use Litko markers. |

Markers in the form of dice holders. I posted this here on TMP a while back TMP link must make some more. |

Dice in black powder but intend to use deaders once we have enough for both BP and HC games. May use the figure on a base with number along the edge to save on figures. Like these.. link |

What size dice would you use? 16mm? 12mm? Just curious what size is everyone using? |
JSears | 19 Jan 2012 7:05 p.m. PST |
I use dice at the moment, but plan on creating casualty figures. I recently created a few non-casualty markers to denote other states in Hail Caesar: link |

Small dice, for now. Going to work on a marker idea I saw recently using small stones. |

I do like the idea of casualty figures but as I struggle to get figures painted up for the units I'll end up using markers/tokens/dice instead. |

Dice, but I'm going to make dead guys. |

I have made my own Hail Caesar markers for casualties, disorder, etc. using small circular bases from WarBases that I have painted up. These are simple and work well for now and keep the table uncluttered with piles of markers.
