So, I'm looking at the CEM site, and I'm really impressed with the way they look: cuttingedgeminiatures.com I love the detail on these. However, I would like to know how well they might mix with Foundry 28mm ancients, which makes up the bulk of my armies in that scale. I've scouted around the forums for information on these figures and I've seen a few comments about them being a bit on the small side. A little bit small is acceptable, I think, but I wouldn't want them to be too glaringly obvious. Does anyone have any photos of Cutting Edge and Foundry standing next to each other? If not, could you give me your best estimate as to their ability to mix? Thanks guys. |

A good way to understand and compare both (without having them both in hand or side by side) is to have a measurement from bottom of foot to eye. Some people measure to the top of the head but isnt accurate when comparing to minis that are different in proportions. I have heard in the past the complaint that some mini lines are too thin or too chunkey. I think the most accurate way to compare without the minis side by side is to: #1 have a count on how many heads high your mini stands. #2 and a measurement from bottom of foot to eye. Thats the reason to measure to the eyes. If the mini is 3 heads high like an infant, the forehead is going to change the total hight significantly. Overall measurements to the top of the head can be more decieving because they leave out 'heads high'
You got to give credit for offering 'not more of the same' and that just might be what you are finding so visually refreshing. |

Altius, Can't help with photos but I did see some painted up at a mates and next to newer Foundry. FWIW the size difference was too much for me. However, I think they would fit the older Foundry(Perry sculpts) quite well. Regards gwz |

I bought a few packs to use with my Trojan Armies. I have many Foundry, Old Glory, Black Tree and Redoubt figures in my collection and mix them quite happily (some basing alterations required). Foundry being the smallest/least bulky of them all, BlackTree the biggest. The Cutting Edge Miniatures were probably the finest detailed of all my models, but against the Foundry they looked like 12 year old boys. Against the Redoubt and BlackTree they looked like 20mm 1/72 figures. There was no way I could make them work together as the "realistic" sculpting style is so different from the other ranges bulky oversizing. I ended up selling the CE minis off. Which is a shame as they were actually the nicest of all of them, super detail, wonderful proportions and first class sculpts and casting. I think you will find they work with old Foundry (Gallagher and early Perry sculpts), they will still be smaller and more finely proportioned but heightwise OK. Looked like 12 year olds? Are you comparing to what you find aesthetically pleasing. Thats merely personal preference. Even people like ther Elephants Mammoth for Carthage when they were only 7ft tall. But it's their idea or their vision. From when we are born our proportions go from 3 heads high to approx 8 heads high and you are comparing realistic proportions to more toy soldier proportions. I think you might have the 12 year old comment unintentially backwards. Mike That blog link above looks really good! |

IGWARG1, those are some encouraging pictures for me. They seem to blend pretty well with those Foundrys. |

I think you might have the 12 year old comment unintentially backwards. No, I am quite clear in what I mean. Why don't you try answering the OP question instead of spouting off all the sculpting theory? Have you actually held and painted examples of the 2 ranges the Altius asked about? |

I can give a detailed opinion and I will supress my bias as a hugh fan of Cutting Edge. Cutting Edge are fine and slight sculpted. Ebob has done lots of them and they really are fantastically detailed. Along with the slightness of sculpting comes smaller heads and beacause of this the newer Foundry Biblicals and larger (last before perry split)fit in less well eg Trojan wars, Assyrians and to to leser extent Sumerians. Within Cutting Edge like Foundry there are slight size differences and because of this the bowmen go with ALL Foundry Biblicals. The earlier Foundry Biblicals mix very well with Cutting Edge and once you can accept slighter sculpting you may well find them better actually. Chariots mix perfectly and I have no doubt about that. If you keep an eye on my Blog (Chariot Gamer) over next couple of days I will have an example. Cutting Edge win hands down variety ,output and committement have released such an already large amount of packs. Hope this helps. |

SculptIng restricted proportions is more work. Perhaps thats part of why I can appreciate E Bobbies work. I knew it was him but didn't want to say till Colin mentioned it. I use a little broader shoulder version of his skellies to sculpt with. They are 28mm to the eyes. And these look like 7-8 heads high minis, thanks CE for taking some or allot of the "toy" out of toy soldiers. Mike |

Thanks for all the helpful comments, guys. I completely missed that photo from CEM's website. And Colin, your blog site looks promising so I just joined. |

Altius-Thanks for joining blog. Next up will be Mitanni regular spearmen using Foundry leader. It is important to see different figure ranges painted up together to get full comparison. Not sure which army you like but the next out from Cutting Edge will be Mitanni/Syrian chariots followed by Egyptian ones. |
