Anybody make something close, in 15mm? |
Space Monkey | 12 Aug 2011 6:46 p.m. PST |
Or 28mm or 6mm? I'm surprised those designs haven't influenced more gaming minis. |
clkeagle | 12 Aug 2011 6:52 p.m. PST |
Mad Robot, Could you post some examples of what you mean? I've never seen the anime, but a Google Image Search showed me quite a few different things. Some are easily done in 15mm, some aren't. Chris K. |
Eli Arndt | 12 Aug 2011 6:52 p.m. PST |
Darkson has on in the AE WWII stuff. There are some in 6mm in Brigade Models stuff. Influences occasionally show up now and again, but considering how loosey goosey the IP for Kow's creations is run, why hasn't it been more popular? Steve, this might be another particular angle for you. Fin d a way to deliver the MaK/SF3D feel but perhaps a bit more contempoary. Perhaps the elements of retro that show up in the designs have turned people away? Chris, therei s no anime actually. SF3D/MaK are a series of models dating from back in the 80s. They were really never more than a series of garage kits. You can find them in model shops still but a good majority of the models are customer jobs and stuff made by fans. -Eli |

I would be willing to settle for 1/72 scale figs. |
nothing | 12 Aug 2011 7:22 p.m. PST |
There's something about the round, bulky, old-tech look that is interesting. There are tons of variations one can find. It's got this 1940's design & engineering vibe, very cool. |
Eli Arndt | 12 Aug 2011 7:28 p.m. PST |
Steve, It would update pretty easy by simply removing some of the exposed power leads. I've seen pics where they have put chain guns and missiles pods of a more modern design. The body designs are pretty universal for high tech scifi. It could easily represent a hi-tech, clean design. I wouldn't doubt if some of the AT-43 designs were influence by SF3D/MaK. -Eli |
Gunner Dunbar | 12 Aug 2011 7:48 p.m. PST |
Mad Robot, if you were to release a M.a.k based 15mm line I would be all over it like (insert crude joke here) theres very little around with that round design, and I love M.a.K designs, especially the SAFS designs. |
Wolfprophet | 12 Aug 2011 7:58 p.m. PST |
"Could you post some examples of what you mean? I've never seen the anime, but a Google Image Search showed me quite a few different things. Some are easily done in 15mm, some aren't." Never was an anime. It's just a series of Japanese models based off an idea of German-made powered armour suits. I'd love to see some in 15mm as well. I suppose Blue Moon's Orion troops could work as a proxy. They're a little more sci-fi, but they fit the general shape somewhat. |
clkeagle | 12 Aug 2011 8:09 p.m. PST |
For the first pic Mad Robot posted
GZG's older Power Armor suits are pretty close to that, as are Micropanzer's upcoming Russians. Some of the walkers I found on the image search resembled Blue Moon's vehicle offerings. Chris K. |

Yes please
I would buy these by the bushel, just like in 1/35

McWong73 | 12 Aug 2011 8:50 p.m. PST |
What Chris K said. Older GZG power armour has a close look, but at 15mma lot of the MaK details are lost. |
Jakar Nilson | 12 Aug 2011 10:52 p.m. PST |
Eureka did make some not-Melusines almost a decade back, but discontinued them at the same time as they stopped producing a number of quite familiar minis. Can't remember if they were 15mm or 28mm. There actually is a short live action/stop motion movie from the late 80s that's very close to both the MaK/SF3D setting and the work of Makoto Kobayashi. It ran at most 30 minutes, and had this Australian actor as the pilot interacting with his suit/walker (can't remember which) among the war-torn wasteland. |

also tau stealth suits by "evil corporation" are close |
Gunner Dunbar | 13 Aug 2011 1:37 a.m. PST |
Hi Jakar – the Eureka SAFS were 25mm and suited the GZG 25mm Sci fi, they were quite nice, I would get them now if they were still available. |
ordinarybass | 13 Aug 2011 6:44 a.m. PST |
Definitely check out the tau XV25 stealth suits. They'd still be oversized for 15mm, but they might work, and they definitely have a similar style. Also, as they are plastic, they'd be much easier to modify to suit your needs. link |
Eli Arndt | 13 Aug 2011 8:15 a.m. PST |
I'll have to diagree on the XV25 suits being anything near the style of SF3D. They are much busier in their design, more akin to true anime mecha. -Eli |
infojunky | 13 Aug 2011 5:37 p.m. PST |
Mad Robot in Japan they made some "wargame" figures that where 1/100th scale, but the reference was to what looks to be "garage" kits that was only available at shows in Japan briefly. I am slowly working on some "inspired" vehicles, but they aren't going well at this point. |
Gunner Dunbar | 13 Aug 2011 10:28 p.m. PST |
actually I have been looking at the Tau stealth suits and think I can covert it pretty easily to a M.a.K style SAFS, I'm going to try that. |
nothing | 14 Aug 2011 10:09 a.m. PST |
I can definitely see the resemblance in the XV25 body. Gunner if you do them, please post a few pics alongside your other 15mm guys. I'd love to see it. |
Lampyridae | 14 Aug 2011 11:35 a.m. PST |
The older XV15 is also worth a look. Especially if you green stuff it to make it bulkier. |
Eli Arndt | 14 Aug 2011 11:41 a.m. PST |
Wow, I really don't see it. SAFS do not have the big ol' googley eye optics and they do not have the multiple segments on the body. The XV25 is also very angular where the SAFS is very round. If you filled in the gaps between the segments and maybe softened some of the angles it might look more so. the big gun is also something that makes the design drift away from the SF3D stuff. Just my two cents. -Eli |
Gunner Dunbar | 14 Aug 2011 11:53 a.m. PST |
Hi Emu – hence the use of the word convert, I was think of filling in all the lines, and head cavity, replacing the legs with re styled terminator legs and changing the arms and weapons, it will make a nice little project. |
Lampyridae | 14 Aug 2011 12:06 p.m. PST |
These things have more of the look you're looking for.
Also, Battlestations boardgame power armour? |

I'm a big fan of MAK and would LOVE to see some inspired 15mm stuff! The only thing I've seen that has reminded me of this type of design is the orion heavy infantry from Blue Moon: link |

Khurasan's "Corsair" powered armor should have the look. Hopefully they'll be released soon! TMP link |
Eli Arndt | 27 Mar 2012 10:51 a.m. PST |
The Corsairs are way bigger than MaK/SF3d stuff. They would work in a pinch and certainly look the part if you can forgive the size. They are nearly twice the size of Khurasan's upcoming skinny type aliens which are themselves 20mm tall.
-Eli |
Jakar Nilson | 27 Mar 2012 3:31 p.m. PST |
Well, then. We've found the perfect figs for 20mm. |
Lion in the Stars | 27 Mar 2012 5:28 p.m. PST |
Aren't SAFS suits significantly bigger than man-sized, though? |
Eli Arndt | 27 Mar 2012 6:43 p.m. PST |
Not tree times as big.
-Eli |
AVAMANGO | 27 Mar 2012 10:31 p.m. PST |
I think that the Manitou power armour from Kremlin miniatures is a good call, with a little bit of putty work they could be made to look very close to the Maschinen Krieger the only problem i can see is a minimum order of £10.00 GBP with Kremlin miniatures. |
Eli Arndt | 28 Mar 2012 6:24 a.m. PST |
Even with the scale, Khurasan's suits are just too awesome not to use. They could be eavier, two-legged weapons for the MaK universe. Lord knows there is no limit to the imagined designs in that setting. -Eli |
John Treadaway | 28 Mar 2012 8:06 a.m. PST |
