Does anyone know which forces did the dutch mantain at South Africa during this timeline, and which were their uniforms? |

This is a capsule overview of events during the 18th century. The area was actually under control of the VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie) and did not have a standing military force, but colonists did organize themselves in times of crisis. link Cheers, |

Going back to my school history so prob a bit rusty- iirc there was a small garrison at the Castle in Cape town, but on the Frontier the farmers pretty much had to DiY defence and that is how the Commando system arose. Initially the frontier scraps were low key as the Bushmen and Hottentots were mainly hunter gatherers so the area was sparsely populated. It was a different situation when the pastoralist and more organised and numerous Xhosa started to arrive in the late 1700s. This is when the Frontier Wars started in earnest I can't recall if each district small cadre ( under the veldtkornet – field cornet) was VOC, or a citizen, I think it was a citizen force.
The British arrived during the Napoleonic Wars, iirc there was a token resistance in Cape Town but the British found they also had the responsibility of fighting the escalating Frontier Wars.

GiloUK, are you the "Giles" from Tarleton's Quarter"? If so, do you remember anything about the Dutch Defences in Cape before the Napoleonic Wars?

Guys, another question: Does anyone knows the uniform of the Cape garrison that fought the british in the 1790s? I couldn't find it even in the South African Military History Society! |

This is hazy, but I'm sure when I recall seeing a picture of a painting of the them and there were mid blue coats and white/off white leggings. |
