Most of you know that, whenever possible, I strive to think out of the box (because I'm claustrophobic, I guess). Well . . . check this out:

link

And these other ones:

auction

"Top / Base Width
64 mm / 51 mm"

And they are polystyrene too! How cool is that? I guess that means that one could superglue Plastruct and Evergreen strips and other bits on them, right?

They could be tents, huts, bunkers, whatever your imagination can come up with.

Hope it helps and inspires.

Dan
PS. On another website listing, it seems that they are 16mm in height. May need verification though.

Cacique Caribe25 Mar 2011 8:47 a.m. PST

These other ones may be a bit too small (I think – not sure):

auction

"Top / Base Width
38 mm / 25 mm"

And these may be too big:

auction

You might have uses for them though.

Dan
PS. These could become removable roofs for other structures:

They're readily available in bulk through a variety of laboratory supply houses, at very low unit costs, a variety of sizes, and even some other shapes (eg square). Most people won't need 500 of them, but it's an option.

You are absolutely right!

Dan – if you want a few to try out, I have some in my lab

Cacique Caribe25 Mar 2011 9:57 a.m. PST

I would love some! PM sent.

Thanks!

Dan

Looking at them they are also a source of cheep Polystyrene….

A stack of 100 or 500 might be of some great use.

Caribe yet another good idea…

Nice find Dan – shame about the £20.00 GBP postage to the UK!

Andrew,

You and I could split a set, and all the postage you'd need to pay will be from my home to yours.

Let me see what Frederick's look like first.

What do you say?

Dan

Given up for good27 Mar 2011 1:33 p.m. PST

Dan,

Happy to do that as long as you let me pay half the postage to you as well as the postage to me grin

Andrew

Cacique Caribe13 Apr 2011 2:00 p.m. PST

Andrew,

I contacted the seller and he asures me that the hex ones are about 19mm or 3/4 inch tall (for the medium-sized ones), so I'll be placing my order soon*:

auction

I'd still like to see what other types are in the package "Frederick" is sending me.

Thanks,

Dan
* And let me know how many you'd like. I seriously doubt I'll keep more than 20-25 (I'll use about 15 and the rest are spares). Combat Wombat also expressed interest in getting a few (10).

Cacique Caribe16 Apr 2011 4:35 p.m. PST

UPDATE:

Thanks to the samples Frederick sent me, I went ahead and placed my order for the medium hexagonal ones a couple of days ago and they arrived just this morning:

auction

They look absolutely stunning! Perfect for 15mm figures. I will try to take and post comparison photos soon, as current circumnstances permit.

Andrew will get 15, Combat Wombat another 15, and I'll keep about 20-15.

Dan

Cacique Caribe26 Apr 2011 10:24 a.m. PST

Andrew and Combat Wombat,

Finally sending them out today.

Anyway, I may dress a few of mine like these PA shanties:

That would strengthen them up a bit too.

Looking forward to seeing how these work out for you Dan. I may have to make an investment as well.

Jeff,

PM me your address. It may take a couple before I get home but, when I do, I'll send you a few to play with and check out first hand.

Question:

Is there such a thing as NON-slotted hexagonal figure bases?

If so, I'm thinking they would be ideal for "decorating" the roof of these hexagonal tents.

Anyone know?

Or how about hexagonal flight bases?

Thanks,

Dan

Given up for good30 Apr 2011 4:48 a.m. PST

Dan,

I've just taken delivery of a flight stand from 15mm.co.uk that's hex and has one hole in it and this is the first topic I read on the board!

These mech bases are hex with a lip rather than a slot link

Found this as well link last time I was looking for hexes – ended up with Litko cutting me some clear ones for the ships.

Cacique Caribe30 Apr 2011 8:09 a.m. PST

Too cool!!!

Hey, let me know when you get the hex weigh boats.

Dan

Cacique Caribe30 Apr 2011 7:14 p.m. PST

Well, the polystyrene hexagonal weighing boats are definitely 19-20mm in depth/height, so should work well with 15mm on thin washers.

They are thin plastic, so I went and applied a little superglue to the inside of one and doubled the thickness that way. Done like that, the thickness and sturdiness becomes comparable to that of most vacuum-formed terrain pieces, such as Amera's.

1) With a few scap bits of Evergreen/Plastuct styrene sheets and strips, I could easily turn them into shanties like these:

link

2) Or, if I can get my hands on a hexagonal base to add to the roof, and add something for the door and something for horizontal windows (Evergreen/Plastruct bits again) I think that could complete the look of an SF bunker or colony hut.

3) Or, with some textured spray paint, I could turn them into "bug huts" for Spugs or Crusties. The hexagonal shape does scream of insectoids!!!

The possibilities for all three are definitely there to exploit.

Of course, either way, I have plans to make the roof removable somehow.

Either way, I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Infojunky: "Caribe yet another good idea…"

LOL. Let's see how they turn out first! Hopefully the ones I sent Andrew and Combat Wombat arrive soon, so they can see and play with them a bit too. I'm sure they'll have some useful feedback once they experiment on their own.

New shiny stuff on its way grin

I'm sure CW will get his first leaving me the problem to come up with something new…

Cacique Caribe01 May 2011 10:36 a.m. PST

Lol.

True. I think my wife sent out at the same time this past Monday.

Dan

Cacique Caribe04 May 2011 3:34 a.m. PST

Andrew/Combat Wombat,

Wife confessed that she left the packages on the kitchen counter before she went on her business trip.

When I get home tomorrow, I'll send them out.

Apologies for the delay.

Dan

Given up for good04 May 2011 11:42 a.m. PST

Not the first time that has happened worry not.

For me its an advantage – more time for me to come up with an idea grin

Cacique Caribe04 May 2011 3:36 p.m. PST

Well, I took several packages to the post office a couple of hours ago. Yours, Combat Wombat's, and a little something for Rebel Mike*, etc.

Anywhoo, let me know when it gets there.

Andrew, Combat Wombat,

Has the package arrived yet? It's been a week. One of you should have gotten theirs by now.

Thanks,

Dan

Mines arrived at home today

Looking forward to having a play ASAP – most likely will be the weekend before I can get to them though.

Many thanks

The elongated weigh boats could have some applications as well.

Cacique Caribe12 May 2011 1:16 p.m. PST

Andrew,

Combat Wombat got his too. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with.

Dan

flintlocklaser12 May 2011 1:22 p.m. PST

Have any of you guys got pictures of them with 15mm minis beside them? These seem like a great idea but I'd like to see them next to some actual lead so I can decide whether or not to grab some.

Dan, that is exactly what I needed, and fortunately it looks like they'll be a perfect size for my refugee Hooverville/shantytown idea. Thanks a million!

Ken

EDIT: I also just thought of gluing two of them together to make a water tower terrain piece. Hmm….

Cacique Caribe13 May 2011 1:59 p.m. PST

Glad to hear.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do.

So far I have managed to get one based and covered in plastic filler to give it a rough edge. Tried twice to make a tent like opening and failed but will try again.

Pictures here: link

Andrew

Cacique Caribe30 May 2011 9:59 a.m. PST

Very cool!

Did you mount it as a single form, or with two glued together, one inside the other for strength?

Dan

Given up for good30 May 2011 12:05 p.m. PST

Went for a single layer as the gunk I use adds strength to the sides.

Cacique Caribe07 Jul 2011 10:21 a.m. PST

Has anyone tried anything new with them recently?

Thanks,

Dan

Forgive me – I'm under a deadline for the SMS show of 36 days and a lot to do link

I do have to get an order in a for a few bits to go on these – been trying to get time over the last two weekends but family came first (complete with sun, sea and cockles) grin

Cacique Caribe27 Nov 2011 6:09 p.m. PST

Approximate dimensions of the hexes:

64mm x 51mm x 24mm

So, if you go by a formula of 3mm = foot, then you are looking at a hexagonal structure that is around:

21ft x 17ft x 8ft

Dan

Cacique Caribe23 Dec 2011 8:48 p.m. PST

I wonder if these triangular dishes could be used for something for 15mm figures:
