After the fall what sort of pack/riding animals will be available?

That is the question.

KNARLOC-RIDERS

TALLARN-MUKAALI-ROUGH-RIDERS

Are a couple of ideas I have seen. Then there are the Brahman from Fallout. And the Knarloc are remind me of Chocobo. And well the Mulaaki are either Dino or mutant camels…

Not to for get the pack animal/mounts of the Quar.

I kinda am learning towards the dino option.

Though I still like the idea of pack bears.

If you can get them, the mutie beasts from Gorkamorka were pretty cool. Also the orc cavalry critters from Chronopia had some potential – giant mutant cameloids, sort of.

For a realistic scenario, the same beasts that man has always used – horses (plus donkeys and mules), camels (plus llamas and alpacas), dogs, oxen (plus water buffalo and yaks), and maybe even some exotic stuff like elephants and reindeer. Also, since realistic apocalypse is about the dark side of human nature, assorted slaves.

For a Gamma World type game, anything goes. Pleistocene megafauna (terror birds, giant sloths, mammoths, Balucitherium, Brontotherium, Moropus, and an Entelodont to amuse CC), Dinosaurs (theropods, nodosaurs, ceratopsians, maybe a duckbill or two just for novelty), or even giant normal critters like you see on the better class of carousel (rabbits, cats, chickens, etc.). You should also consider some sort of cephalopod if you wish to play with our resident bartentacle, DancesWithWords. I'd kind of like a pig with wings (Pigasus?)…

Depending on your budget (in terms of time and money) you might want to browse ebay for cheap pre-painted click/Mageknight/D&D figures.

Something like this is cheap, come pre-painted and based, and even saves you the trouble of having to hack the original rider off. :)

auction

Added: Search "D&D rider", "D&D cavalry" and "D&D mounted" on ebay for a quick list of what's available. Boars, dinos, weird-looking horses, and even a griffin…

infojunky12 Mar 2011 12:44 a.m. PST

I like all of those suggestions, I'll take them.

Being that I am starting with Fallout as a premise, weid and quirky works.

Mine is a cartoon Post-Apocalypse….

fatesficklefinger12 Mar 2011 3:39 a.m. PST

How about people? (a mutant butt may be sighted, be warned) picture picture picture picture picture picture picture picture

28mmMan12 Mar 2011 9:19 a.m. PST

And of course simple chimeras are always fun.

You do not need them to be huge monsters…but rather simple one two punches of common animals:

pig-bear
horse-cat
etc.

Didn't think of it before, but after this evening's Netflix selection, what about "THEM!"?

imdb.com/title/tt0047573

Norman D Landings13 Mar 2011 5:40 a.m. PST

Thems are great. I'd ride a Them.

Spider-goat is something science ought to be working on right now.

Terror-birds of some description would be short on luggage capacity, but sporty and fearsome:

This takes me back: picture

Why hasn't anyone already done a miniature of this guy?

28mmMan13 Mar 2011 8:57 a.m. PST

Because "access is forbidden"? What was it?

28mmMan13 Mar 2011 9:01 a.m. PST

Was it Peace? picture picture

PS
While searching I found a muse for a 15mm miniature project picture I always liked Franklin, funny guy with talking equipment.

Altius13 Mar 2011 11:07 a.m. PST

You got an "access is forbidden" on that?

Yeah, it was Peace. I linked to a photo of the movie poster.

Geez, how anticlimactic is that?

Lampyridae14 Mar 2011 1:59 a.m. PST

10-foot-long Cockroaches!

If they insist on surviving everything, they may as well make themselves useful.

Real ones are in scale too, come free with random movement rules and also move themselves, speeding up gameplay. They automatically seek cover and make a very satisfying casualty marker when hit with a bombardment template.

For Postman-type apocalypse:

Norman D Landings14 Mar 2011 5:11 a.m. PST

Lampyridae, you are a twisted genius.

I remember reading an anecdote on an RPG forum about someone who once evaluated their player's reacion to a giant spider encounter by popping a pet tarantula on the table and noting the responses.

infojunky15 Mar 2011 7:03 p.m. PST

After a couple of close calls with Asian Roaches here at Casa MacDude, I don't believe I will be adding live roaches to the gaming collection.

I make my kin from Japan empty their luggage and shake out their clothes in the court before entering the house. I also spray just before they get here and right after they leave.

Should transport 'animals' / mutants have all kinds of stowage sculpted onto them or do you like your mounts bare with a stowage sprue or two ?

infojunky22 Mar 2011 3:12 a.m. PST

Well I prefer sculpted on and some free bagage.

Or a pack frame sculpted on with an assortment of of baggage to be added at your choice. thus the best of both worlds.

Battle Miniatures Emporium22 Mar 2011 4:09 a.m. PST

Love Bagged gear a weapons on mounts.

Ever read Jack Vance's classic novella THE DRAGON MASTERS? The reptilian alien Grephs used mutated humans as their war beasts/steeds, while humans used mutated Grephs as their warbeasts/steeds:

I've often thought that the scenarios found in the novella would make for a great miniatures game… just sayin'evil grin

There was a Heavy Metal comic series called The Waters of Deadmoon, which had the normal human "cavalry" ride large mutant humans. They also used the mutants as food.
Maybe use 28mm Neanderthals?

Stepman301 Mar 2012 9:55 a.m. PST

Is this an Earth based apocalyptic world? If so the horse has proven a reliable sorce of transportation for millions of years… Mother Nature is rarley wrong…
