Which no-longer-published wargaming magazine do you miss the most? |
Battle Works Studios | 21 Feb 2011 9:45 a.m. PST |
Space Gamer. MARS is a close second and I used to love Challenge and Shadis, but damn I miss Space Gamer. Even the post-Steve Jackson stuff was better than anything on the market today – the "Battle Born" era issues were especially jammed full of stuff. And no, it's not just because of Big Lizzie. :) |

Space Gamer and JTAS/Challenge. Even the post-Steve Jackson stuff was better than anything on the market today Those first Space Gamer issues post-SJ were packed full of "stuff", but very little of it was all that useful or well written. The new owners took SG from a respected industry magazine to a "fanzine with ambitions" in two issues. I did not renew my subscription. |

The new owners took SG from a respected industry magazine to a "fanzine with ambitions" in two issues. I did not renew my subscription. You missed out. There was a rough stretch right after Jackson, but the guys who took over for these issues link were insanely enthusiastic and full of original (if weird) ideas. They still didn't bring back the glory days, but their own version was a good one, and the mag was full of complete games in that era. They still have the rights to the name AFAIK, too. |

Ares, and SPI-era Strategy & Tactics. For all I know S&T might still be kicking around somewhere, in the hands of the fifth or sixth set of owners, with a new issue published every once in a blue moon. None of the post-SPI S&T's were as good, I thought. |

Not a wargame magazne per se, but Dragon. Oh I know its a n e-print format, which no longer puts out "issues" but content when they feel like it. But it is a pale shadow of what once was

^ It's entirely possible that Old W.D. is better in memory than it would be directly compared to what W.D. is now. That being said
Back when it had content about games that weren't just the in-house materials, it could at least pretend to be about bringing gaming news to the community. I miss Dragon Magazine
I used to get it a year after publication from a friend who subscribed. Now it's been etherealized and I'm reduced to reading back issues in rotation. |

Back when it had content about games that weren't just the in-house materials Ah, but it did just cover the games that GW had in its warehouse for sale. I miss the old WD too. Best job ever! |
