What are your blogs sculpted out of?

MajorB01 Nov 2010 7:12 a.m. PST

It's a Blogger blog.

Oh, sorry you meant "blobs"!!! grin

Buzzkill01 Nov 2010 7:27 a.m. PST

Why don't you save yourself the trouble and just glue some rice grains on a coin…I honestly don't get the allure of the super small scales, I would just play with cardboard chits at this point.

I believe he uses wax to sculpt with.

Have you ever seen 3mm in person? Because if you had I don't think you would hold that opinion.

Rice can actually be quite effective:

Yes, he uses the wax.

Yes, very nice work. I think for my customers I'll stick to buildings!.. lol

Have you considered making "horse & musket" 1mm miniatures, there was a manufacturer that made them, Conflict Miniatures, way back. I have seen only one photo, they looked like simple blocks of infantry and cavalry, with towns and terrain features, all in a "big battle" set (Waterloo I think). A nice idea I think.

cfielitz01 Nov 2010 12:12 p.m. PST

Yeah, sorry, I meant blobs. At 7:04 a.m, its hard for me to distinguish between blobs and blogs without a lot of coffee in me.

Here's some of my 2mm and 3mm stuff, also non-chit-like, yet only slightly more expensive:

They'd look even better if I could take a better picture.

Whereabouts in Ontario are you, KenH01? I'm in Peterborough.

I know that feeling.

Hey boy wundyr x

I'm in Ottawa.

I have 2mm Ancients, ECW, ACW, Naps, Modern and 3mm WW2. also have 1/6000 WW2 ships. I like the small stuff!

I am in Potsdam, NY. I have 2mm, 3mm, ACW, Ancients, Sci-Fi, Ironclads, VSF and more as well as 1:6000 Great War and Modern Naval.

You can get astounding detail out of the little blobs if you are patient (or obsessive)enough.

Besides, who want to do BIG battles, that actually look like big battles instead of overblown skirmishes?

In 2/3mm you can actually do a 1:1 man:figure ratio on a normal table, with groundscale equal to figure scale.

Battlescale01 Nov 2010 4:26 p.m. PST

I have done a 'Horse & musket' era blob unit block. It's just been moulded so as soon as its cast up I'll paint a few up and post them onto the blog. I quite like the idea of a big battle on a very small surface using blocks of troops to represent units. What could be better than spending a weekend painting up an entire ACW or Napoleonic army rather than spending months or even years before enjoying your gaming!

Man I couldn't agree with Buzzkill more. To each his own I guess. I just don't see the point.

I paint hands and faces on my 2mm stuff, although the hat lace is a bit tricky.

After a stint on the 2mm, it is very odd switching back to large scales, even 6mm stuff looks absolutely enormous.

Kraussian02 Nov 2010 11:39 p.m. PST

Wow, they look much better than I thought!

I have a bunch of Irregular's 2mm minis, and couldn't help but think that they could have been so much better if the casting were crisper.

If Simply 6 can cast the final products anywhere near as crisply as those pictures… you have a potential customer! grin

Battlescale03 Nov 2010 5:30 a.m. PST

Also just posted a pic of a few of the horse & musket era troop blocks which I cast and painted up.

Kraussian03 Nov 2010 7:35 p.m. PST

Hmm… the Horse & Musket troops don't look that impressive.

In fact, I can't quite see the difference between them and the 2mm blocks sold by Irregular Miniatures.

Cheomesh04 Nov 2010 5:46 a.m. PST

Geeze; how do you guys paint this stuff?

M.

KenH0104 Nov 2010 6:04 a.m. PST

Cheomesh

The answer would be the same as the answer to how do you paint the very fine detail on your 28mm figures. Painting buttons and eyes and other detail on a large figure is no different than painting camo or uniforms on small ones.

These are 3mm.
