This afternoon I picked my copy of WAB El Cid which has been sitting on a shelf after only a cursory read several years ago. I was wondering does anyone still play this period and if so does it give a good game?

Don't dodge the question Allen – do you still play it? ;)

Yes its one of the more popular ones unlike for example Spartacus.

You see it much less often on the 2nd hand stalls which is my bellweather for the success of the WAB supplements

Still using a title you have no claim to? Lovely.

I play it once in a while. I have lots of armies, but Berber army is one of my favorites for the conventions.

Impetus rules ? Any rules that leave the figures per base to the players discretion should be played with counters and be regarded as boardgame.

And a pretty silly one.

Just like any set of miniatures rules you CAN play Impetus with counters.

But I'd argue that the flexibility you seem to dislike so much actually actually makes it a good game in which to use miniatures.

It really allows people to be creative and I've seen some absolutely gorgeous looking armies done for Impetus. Each base can become a mini-diorama.

And Impetus is a fantastic game to play as well.

Dumb statements like that make me want to play Impetus.

Not IMHO, one of those I tried once and binned – and I usually like to give a rules set a through test.

But back to the question, yes El Cid is a damn good WAB supplement, well worth playing.

I still amuses me how 'board game' iss an insult in the miniatures world.

Are board games just for kids then?
