You get the idea.

This structure, either here on Earth or in a science fiction setting of an alien planet or perhaps on Earth but time displaced to study the vast array of life found in the past or to see what is left/different in the future.

Fun times in my eyes.

Insert just about any genre, well genres I like :) and it still fits.

A handful studying the sunken city of R'lyeh…

A new look at Waterworld, with 75% of the human race mutated to live in the water…

A mission to study the seas of the Cambrian or Devonian…

A superhero/villain lair…

A spy headquarters…

ah yes, or best of all my house!

That looks really cool!

I'd be happy to live on board, provided a responsible captain, navigator, and helmsman can be found.

Cool! One of the original Traveler mods had something like that, I think.

I have been contemplating a game setting that is basically a 'reboot' of the SeaQuest series. One of the ideas is that the UEO is comprised primarily of semi-mobile 'sea steads' which have banded together for security purposes. Smaller vessels like these might form an important part of the UEO though. Thanks for the link!

See, great minds and such. I was thinking SeaQuest or the like also.

And Traveller…

And that a good crew would make the difference :)

******

I was thinking about this last night, and the Cambrian or Devonian research station is what get my mind a spinning. Insert say, 30 or so Sea Orbiters in the time zone with crews and then insert a global disaster like a big piece of space rock coming to visit us in the current time line…transfer as many people as possible and use the time tunnel to escape the impending doom…then the survivors deal with the issues at hand…like:

trilobites are found to be intelligent!

there is an alien colony near the Southern polar cap!

one of these was sighted by SO-13 Hydra (Sea Orbiters were named after mythological creatures) picture picture !

I would be quite curious as to what affect the larger wave action or high winds would have on the structure.

It is made with the iceberg principle of 10-15% above and the remaining below…at least with volume/mass.

There seems to be little wind collection for energy which is odd. The saucer section is made to be a wave anchor as well as the center post keel, but even this is questionable.

I am not an engineer and the designer is, so I am sure there is math to explain the issues; but at a quick glance it looks to be a throw up factory in median wave action.

Still like it though :) bunches and bunches

Been working on the Sea Orbiter names

SO-01 Dragon
SO-02 Leviathan
SO-03 Chimera
SO-04 Thunderbird
SO-05 Wyvern
SO-06 Kraken
SO-07 Pegasus
SO-08 Fenris

SO-10 Satyr
SO-11 Peryton
SO-12 Buraq
SO-13 Hydra
SO-14 Mermaid
SO-15 Jotunn
SO-16 Minotaur
SO-17 Basilisk
SO-18 Naga
SO-19 Unicorn
SO-20 Manticore
SO-21 Lamia
SO-22 Gorgon
SO-23 Tengu
SO-24 Cerberus
SO-25 Garuda
SO-26 Centaur
SO-27 Phoenix
SO-28 Griffin
SO-29 Sphinx
SO-30 Quetzalcoatl

You have to admit, the uniform patches would be spectacular!

28mmMan24 Oct 2010 6:41 p.m. PST

Just based upon the ultra cool uniform patch, which Sea Orbiter would you request a duty transfer?

*****

Me? Hmmm, I would have to say any would be great, especially considering the potential missions…but just based upon the patch coolness factor:

1st SO-30 Quetzalcoatl
2nd SO-27 Phoenix
3rd SO-12 Buraq

This is shaping up to be an interesting RPG starting point :)

You seriously need to read Stephen Baxter's Flood and the sequel, Ark. It includes a scientifically plausible mechanism to actually drown the Earth… namely deep subterranean aquifers collapsing and releasing their pressurised water…

28mmMan25 Oct 2010 8:25 p.m. PST

link Baxter's Flood and Ark…on my short list, thanks!

******

PS
I am going to take a shot at your choice unit Lampy! Based upon your illuminating name:

1st…SO-27 Phoenix
2nd…SO-09 Kirin
3rd…SO-23 Tengu

All known for bringing light/knowledge/insight or fire to man or man's world.

I meant to put my third choice, for me, as SO-25 Garuda, oh well.

Hydra but no Dagon? And where's Jormungandr (or however you want to spell it)? Also, Scylla and Charybdis?

I love the idea of visiting the Cambrian and Devonian seas!!!

How about naming the time-traveling craft the HG Wells?

"Hydra but no Dagon? And where's Jormungandr (or however you want to spell it)? Also, Scylla and Charybdis?"

Dagon and the big C, great choices, but they were rejected by the voting committee :)

Jormungandr was the front runner for SO-15, I flipped a coin :(

Scylla and Charybdis are slated for SO-31 and SO-32.

The time machine name is a good one, done.

Hmmm, very neat idea for an RPG setting, you've also got my mind whirling…. The only issue I can see with using the Cambrian as a 'lifeboat' is that the atmosphere was slightly different in composition (less O2) and it might not be possible to support a human population without substantial long-term technological assistance. The Devonian period wouldn't have as much of an issue- but the land might be a safer site for bases!

So the idea of pre-human intelligent life has always interested me- hard to rule out in an absolute sense, since enough time has gone by that there's be no evidence to find. Another possibility for an 'early intelligence' would be cephalopods – they existed in some diversity and their modern descendants are often surprisingly smart.

That is true, the atmosphere would produce its own issues to be sure. With the higher SO2 and CO2 in varying degrees, there would be wide fluctuations in temperature as well as making it harder for us to breathe. But near the middle-end of the Cambrian period we see a vast increase in O2 due to the higher temperatures, which helps to bloom the flora/fauna in an explosion in variety.

So there would need to be several stages of filtering and scrubbing…the high SO2 would worry me far more than the lower O2 :(

*******

I just named those two periods off the cuff, most assuredly the program would be more likely to succeed in a more friendly atmosphere :)

SO-12 Buraq was destroyed in a freak electrical storm…it is a sad event to be sure. In honor of the crew and the efforts of scientists, the name and SO# is being retired.

Along with the mission replacement for SO-12, two more Sea Orbiters are also being brought into service.

SO-31 Scylla

SO-32 Charybdis

SO-33 Jormungandr
