I am trying to find out the coat colour of Austrian staff dragoons. My only source is Haythornthwaite's Osprey books. In men at arms 181 (Austrian cavalry) he says that they had standard dragoon uniforms with pike grey coats and red facings. But in 223 (Austrian specialist troops) he refers to them wearing light blue dragoon uniform, again with red facings. Does anybody have better information? Matthew |

There seems to be conflictual informations for sure. In a correspondance with Dave Hollins, this is what he had to say 'In 1809, the Staff Infantry and Cavalry wore their usual (fully white) uniforms with Krapprot (Madder Red) facings on the cuffs and collars, but plain white turnbacks.' Sorry to add to your confusion! Usually in doubt I follow Hollins. Even though light blue dragoons would look nice

I think my Rawkins book on Austrian uniforms quoted blue coats. |

Did Stabsdragoner still exist in the Napoleonic Wars? In a contemporary print of about 1787 the Stabsdragoner had a dark blue coat with red facings. In the Artaria print of 1792 the Stabsdragoner ahd a bright green coat (grass green) with black facings (like cavalry). This might have changed to prevent confusion with the French. According to my source they were only raised in war times and were 3 divisions strong in 1792 and disbanded in 1799 when a dragoon regiment was formed from them. There existed also a Stabsinfanterie – Artaria again shows them in dark blue coats, dark blue turnbacks and red facings for 1792 conflicting with text sources giving white coats with white facings. |

Earlier thread TMP link is very helpful. It seems that after 1799 they were reformed for each campaign on an ad-hoc basis. White coat with madder red facings seems to be the rule for this period. But I don't know where the story of pike grey or light blue coats came from. Matthew |
