2) And, can anyone recommend where to buy bits with that symbol for placing over scratch-built doors/gates (for 15mm and 28mm)?

Thanks.

Dan

"wings of horus"….

flooglestreet26 Jun 2010 12:54 p.m. PST

I don't know what it's called but it the winged solar disc, Ra, with 2 uraeus cobras. It is winged because the sun flies across the sky, and the cobra is the defender of the gods. You will see a cobra on Pharoanic headresses. Hope this helps.

As far as where to get it, Hirst arts do a few moulds with it:

Moulds number 97 and 99 (I'm tickled to death, I only just got those two moulds, havn't even had time to wash the powder off them yet..)

Also, several of the Grendle Historical scenery items are like that :

Winged Sun of Thebes Behedeti

Right on the money.

It is clearly an add for the Egyptian Wonder Ball. You see it so often because it was one of Egypt's chief exports and a major sponsor of public works. The symbolism of the trademarked image is inspired: The wings represent the great height to which the Egyptian Wonder ball can bounce, while the fact that the ball is superimposed over the snakes is a friendly reminder that the Egyptian Wonder ball is more fun than playing with snakes. (Fun fact: Prior to the invention of the Egyptian Wonder Ball many young Egyptian children would play with snake or eel eggs that had been cured in vinegar. Sometimes the impatient children would try to play with the eggs before they had fully cured resulting in many snake and eel bites.)

Shame on you paintbeast, we almost had him fooled.

Right Allen, it is the winged sun, embodyment of Horus of Behedet, aka Behedety. It is btw not specifically a door symbol but a protective symbol, also put above the king in reliefs. Was exported accross the Orient as far as Persepolis.

Crocodile Games might wave something close in their Wargods line…same for the old Grendle Resin terrain pieces.

Egyptian Wonder ball, ask for it by name!

Paintbeast,

Wow. I hadn't been to their website in a very long time, it seems.

I love this:

And, for 15mm gaming terrain/scenics, this has to be good too:

I got a bunch of those bitz from Crocodile for my 6mm Terrain collection … I combined some other them. And a stand of my 6mm SM Infantry are in some of the pics for scale. The first 5-6 pics here are the Crocodile stuff … link

Other cool goodies here, to decorate your tombs, temples and corridors:

However, as nice as those goodies are . . .

They really don't satisfy the need for Egyptian doors and columns, for low ceiling tunnels and corridors (max height about 30mm) in 15mm gaming.

Thanks.

Ironically, given JWs' obsession with avoiding any pagan influence, their original founder Charles Taze Russell was obsessed with this symbol which featured on his published writings & on his pyramid-like tomb…

Cacique Caribe04 Jul 2010 6:41 a.m. PST

True. It seems like there was a LOT of interest in all things ancient Egypt during the Victorian period.

Most of the "brass stampings" I bought this week seem to be Victorian in style:
