Ok
I watched the movie (no spoilers).
MKS, I get what you were skirting
"Rated R for disturbing elements including strong sexuality, nudity, sci-fi violence and language"
Let me quite clear here
if you have any respect for your children and most likely your wife (mine was with me, and I will pay for it for some time I am sure)
do not take them to this movie and do not let them watch it at home unless the kids are adults.
Let us be clear here
the movie does an ironic job of both being a movie about "just because you can do a thing does not mean you should" in reference to cloning/splicing ala modern Dr.'s Frankenstein and being a movie that the director/writer took steps that "just because you can do a thing does not mean you should" in regards to taking a science horror movie and splicing it with bad porn.
The movie reminds me a great deal of The Fly (1986) where the movie is cruising just fine and then becomes nothing but a celebration of sloppy gooey gore and special effects
the director pushed the sex as far as he could then
splice pushes it a bit more with ethical and moral choices that border on B movie tricks of using sex when the story is bad.
I am no frail flower and neither is my wife but yikes
it is not so much the acts of sex and violence is offensive, it is the motive of the writer/director to push buttons rather than tell a story.
Good start, decent middle, then who let the greased pig in the house, followed up with banjo music and guys saying how much they like your purty teeth
it could have taken a much better twist and ended with a story rather than shock value.
I just do not get it when movies take these low roads when the higher road is easier and has free lemonade
sigh.
Certainly not the worst movie ever
not even in my bottom 100
but it is most definitely an adult
not mature kids
adult movie.
I can honestly say that if after reading this and someone was still to take a pre-teen or young teenager (god forbid any younger) I would lose any and all respect for that person.
This movie earns its R due to immoral and unethical choices (not the science mind you, the splicing aspect was so very cool and full of gaming potential) leading to mature situations.
I counted thirteen times during the movie where I said to my wife (first showing, empty theater)
they are making a huge mistake, but they will be ok if
nope, they made another huge mistake, but if
It is almost as if the writer was angry or more likely a closet pervert
too many bad story choices.
Shame really, because the effects are good, Dren (the creature) while creepy does draw emotional attention from the audience (good and bad), and the movie had a chance
then the writer/director smoked a bong, drank the bong water, chased it down with sterno/moonshine shots, and then stayed up all night watching cheap porn and Jerry Springer
inspired they finished the movie.
