It seems to me that there is a serious lack of piles of human bones and skulls for 15mm SF and Fantasy, either in metal or resin:

And, though I once considered it, I really don't want to destroy dozens of nice skeleton figures to make those piles:

So . . . with images and videos like these for inspiration, I thought I'd give it a shot:

QUESTIONS:

How does one go about making such a tiny skull, and not end up with something that looks like the skull of a gorilla? :)
Any suggestions, from you wise 15mm sculptors out there?
Do you just start with a little ball of putty and build it up in stages? Or is that something you should try to do all at once, with a single mix of green stuff?
Any special tools?
How big should it be for a 15mm human? One seventh the total height? Bigger? Smaller?

Thanks.

Dan
PS. I would love to make something like this awesome 15mm urban terrain here:

But I just can't imagine a Post Apocalyptic terrain without piles and piles of bones and skulls lying around, among the ruins and rubble. Is it just me?

Id, go with a simple ball, add a tiny ridge to suggest the upper jaw and teeth, then make the eye sockets. At this scale you won't need much detail and as they will be in a pile you can sacrifice deatil for suggestion.

You do realise that piles o' skulls is a slippery slope to spikes, chains, tomes, loincloths on power armour, capes on power armour, chainswords, censers, braziers, walking church organs, nuns with guns and pseudo-Latin?

Have you seen this – I use it as a Barker-Marker for HOTT

Shedman,

Neat. Is that for 15mm?

Just so you know, Donnington miniatures sells a 15mm pile of skulls, along with crucified and impaled victims in their Casualties range:

They appear to be Panda skulls.

Harsh but fair.

Guys,

Believe it or not, last night I gave it a go and sculpted about half a dozen. They look pretty good to me, but I'll post some pics later today, so you can give me some feedback and pointers.

Thanks everyone!

…one skull at a time my friend, one skull at a time…

Panda skulls…

No wonder they're so hard to find these days.

Though they would make great guerilla warfare tokens.

It is actually for 25mm as is most of Dreamholme's stuff

Skull pile vs 15mm Mongols – even Gengiz would have been proud of this pile!

Yes, the Donnington skulls are awful but the Peter Pig skulls look good. I have several packs of them waiting to reach the top of the list of things to do. My plan was to stick them to a lump of Milliput so I didn't have to use so many to make a pile of them.

Exactly. No sense wasting skulls where they won't be seen.

Would it be possible to use complete skeletons broken down & mixed with Peter Pig skulls over Milliput blanks. Layer down one floor/wall/column as masters and then cast them? Possible to reuse the same pieces for new terrain items. If you mould them in silicon rubber then you could cast them in resin.
any use?

PS No not just you as I would love to have them for Ashanti,Sudan, Mongols,Matabele wars etc
