I am thinking of having a go at this period, using the new Outpost figures, if I can drum up any support at my local club.

Anyone given any thoughts to rules?

One of the attractions to me is the small scale of the armies so the likes of POW are probably not going to be appropriate

By the way I an new to later 19th century gaming outside of ACW

Dave,

I am with you as well. I haven't gamed anything in the period, but am looking forward to painting up lots of the Outpost figures.

I am wondering about rules for the Franco-Prussian war to see if they are appropriate. The problem is getting the Bolivians to mesh with them.

Jeff

Have you found any sources other than Wikipedia?

Hi Dave (and Jeff)

Although much of it is in spanish, this is a very good site

I agree with Jeff – given the use of similar weapons, FPW rules should generally be fine.

I hope you convince the club :-)
Best Regards,
Jeff

Here is a bit of reading material in English (and one in Spanish) that might help you if still available:

"To the Last Cartridge" Vol 1&2 by Alan Curtis published by George Nafziger. Pretty good for wargaming purposes with detailed organizations, OOB's etc. and the most bang for the buck I'd say if I could only choose one book (set)

A wargaming booklet entitled "The Pacific War 1879-84" by Terry Hooker published by El Dorado Books.

"Andean Tragedy" by William Sater is a pretty detailed military history of the war with organizations, maps etc. and well worth buying.

"The Ten Cents War" by Bruce Farcau. I think the best overview of the war in a relatively small volume that I've read.

"The Royal Navy & The Peruvian-Chilean War 1879-1881" by Rudolph de Lisle. Essentially the watercolor illustrated diary of a Royal Navy officer with various illustrations of the ports/ships/terrain/people etc. of general interest. Interestingly enough, Rudolph de Lisle was killed when serving with one of the Naval Brigade's machine guns at the battle of Abu Klea link and I recently ran across his name in a photo of a monument at the battle site link

"Uniformes de la Guerra del Pacifico 1879-1884" by Patricio Greve Moller & Claudio Fernandez Cerda is en Espanol but has many color illustrations of the uniforms, flags and weapons of the belligerents. Expensive though.

"The war on the Pacific coast of South America between Chile and the allied republics of Peru and Bolivia. 1879-'81" by Theodorus Mason is an official period document written by a US Navy Lieutenant and it's free! : link

There are quite a few Spanish books and .pdfs about the subject since it's a defining period for the countries involved but I believe the majority are Chilean. Hope this helps.

I am seeking to do this in 28mm and am looking at one of the Piquet rule systems!

Do you know of anyone who may have a spare copy of the rules as I believe they are out of print..?

I like the battle pics from your game.

I am slowly painting up 10mm armies for the Pacific War. A few points:
- Andean Tragedy is ane excellent read and explains tactics, etc.
- Uniformes de la Guerra del Pacifico 1879-1884 is now in English and still expensive (great for uniforms guide tho)
- I plan on using Neil Thomas wargaming rules for 19th Century Europe. Infantry are broken down into "formed" and "loose" doctrine. Most in this period seemed to have fought formed with the exception of some Chilean units whose commanders trained thier troops in modern French tactics. Neil's rules address this very well, as well as the nuance between muzzle loaders and breach loading rifles.

What size are the unis for the Neil Thomas rules..?

Prince Alberts Revenge10 Jun 2012 6:27 p.m. PST

"units" are four stands, I base my formed order units with 4 figures for 16 figure units. The rules themselves are probably 5 pages within the book. You can add period flavor for the Pacific War, but I'm not sure it will really need much (maybe some additional c&c). search some of my posts and you will find a Bolivian unit in 10mm and some commentary on the rules.

Are you still gaming this period and what rules are you using now?

We and others have had some good games using BBB. See a report of my Chorrillos & Miraflores game here:

(25,000 men a side, so it was not a small battle. And complete with railway guns, mines, naval gunfire support. machineguns …)
