I am taking the plunge into 15mm sci-fi and would like your opinions on the quirkest, best sculpted or visually appealing miniatures in the 15mm scale. Any ideas?

Top Gun Ace07 Feb 2010 11:12 p.m. PST

Hmmm, lots to choose from in figures, e.g. GZG, Rebel, Khurasan, RAFM, Critical Mass, etc.

For vehicles, I am a bit biased about our new range of Grav Tanks and other armored vehicles, since I sculpted them:

Some others seem to like them too, others not. You can't please everyone…..

15mm Sci-Fi is definitely having a renaissance, so there is plenty to choose from.

Enjoy!

Rebel Minis if you want complete lines. Seems to have a plan when it comes to what they produce.

I agree with Top Gun Ace. Loads of 15mm stuff out there.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa08 Feb 2010 12:10 a.m. PST

Laserburn and Traveller ranges are probably my favourites. The casting for the Laserburn stuff from 15mm.co.uk isn't always spot on and the miniatures style is defintely 80's – cloaks everywhere. The Traveller 15's are still pretty good sculpts even by todays standards, unfortunately the range is a bit limited.

Old Crow for vehicles.

GZG for pretty much everything and anything else you can think of for the 15mm sci-fi battlefield (also excellent service).

infojunky08 Feb 2010 12:44 a.m. PST

I love a lot of the Citadel/RAFM character Figs for Traveller. But right now GZG's New Israeli's get me going. But to be honest it changes from week to week, Depending on the project.

This month and week it is really Litko's corridor system.

For my take it would be the following in the order listed:

Rebel Minis ($5.00 shipping world wide) rebelminis.com
Khurasan Miniatures khurasanminiatures.tripod.com
Ground Zero Games (GZG) groundzerogames.net
Old Crow Models (Great vehicles – makes per order so takes a little while to ship) oldcrowmodels.co.uk
Combat Wombat (Deployed with military right now, but wonderful stuff when he gets back) combatwombatmodels.com

My favorites are Gzg, Rebel, Combat Wombat, RAFM, 15mm.co.uk and QRF. I love QRF's ALIENS-Predators and Colonial Marines line! Gzg has a vast and comprehensive line. Very cool sculpts. Combat Wombat has some really nice stuff at great prices. I love em! Rebel has a rapidly growing range which makes some of the BEST new stuff. 15mm.co.uk has a bunch of stuff including some older sculpts that I like. RAFM is rereleasing the old Traveller line.

Thanks,

John

So far my favorites are Khurasan and Rebel minis.

Moonbeast08 Feb 2010 6:25 a.m. PST

Khurasan
Critical Mass
GZG
Rebel Mini's
Old Crow

I've mixed n' matched figures from all of these companies and love 'em all. I'll soon be adding some Top Gun AFV's to the list (you can never have too much armor).

GeoffQRF08 Feb 2010 6:25 a.m. PST

I love QRF's ALIENS-Predators and Colonial Marines line!

One of these days I will expand the sci-fi line, but not today.

Going back to putting Ranger caps on modern US figures. Mind you, they make quite nice low-tech troops…

JRacel08 Feb 2010 8:09 a.m. PST

I love Critical Mass Game's lines and completely left them off my list this morning. I blaim it on lack of sleep.

I give full vote to Khurasan. Splintered Light has really nice spaceship crew figures too.

the evil morlab08 Feb 2010 8:48 a.m. PST

for humans, the old asgard line for me.

for aliens, khurasan.

BlackWidowPilot Fezian08 Feb 2010 9:25 a.m. PST

Khurasan; this line is just warming up, and already it is IMHO simply brilliant, with an evolving backstory behind the factions human and alien, and with some of the best human militia figures I've seen in this scale.

Highly recommended.

The "The Praesentia" miniatures from critical mass look beautifully sculpted. Any ideas on when they will be released? Alot of their human troops remind me of the Halo game :P

Craig Grady08 Feb 2010 6:30 p.m. PST

We are looking at July/August time for the Praesentia Enzedmaster.

Dragon Gunner08 Feb 2010 6:45 p.m. PST

All of them and convert with head swaps.

Enzedmaster09 Feb 2010 1:27 p.m. PST

Is it me or do most space combat figures are really similar? The only really quirky interesting figures are the 15mm range on Kremlin miniatures.

Are there some decent pictures of GZG figures painted? The site doesn't have many.

Enzedmaster,

Want a specific set to start with?

I'd say that's actually a rather good thing, Enzedmaster! Permits one to mix and match lots of different models from lots of different companies. I think it's great.

Don't care for the Kremlin models myself, but of course YMMV.

SheriffLee09 Feb 2010 2:00 p.m. PST

I like them all

Enzedmaster,

"Visually appealling" and "quirkiest" – both Khurasan's Felids and Karks – though I'd hold back my final vote for the forthcoming Orcids link and Vespulid Swarm: link

Cheers

Thank you for all the great links, I will spending all afternoon looking at them!

I will definetly be putting an order in for some of the Garn figures from Khurasan Miniatures, hopefully they expand the range a bit for them. For now at least I can class them as "mercenaries" for my shark head dudes (can't think of the name atm)

Any idea when the vespids will be released?

khurasanminiatures09 Feb 2010 6:05 p.m. PST

Yep, Enzedmaster, in fact that is next on the list for the sculptor -- crew for the Alligator/Crocodile battle barges, and more poses of Garn warriors, charging I think, but haven't decided yet. He just has to finish five historical sculpts for me, then I have to get him the battle barge hull and turrets (yes, "turrets!") so he can sculpt the seated Garn to crew the thing.

This is the year everything is out there, so ask again after the show season!

Khurasan gets my vote for Niven/Pulp inspired creatures, particulary their non-Kzin. Has the knack of bringing out the figs I want. Do I mention non Daleks again?

GZG for humans, just hope Jon does for the Japs like he's doing for the NAC. The range of "player characters" and ancillary types really inspires.

Combat Wombat does the same for vehicles, just as Old Crow did back in the day with Hammers Slammers.

cb3507910 Feb 2010 8:19 a.m. PST

I really like Spriggan's SPUGs, I just wish the line would be expanded to include power armor, jump troops, and some special characters.

What really draws me to a line of minis is the availability of not only infantry, but a variety of troop types to flush out a force.

Not a big fan of the "animals with guns" trend, but many of the manufacturers making these are really setting the quality bar high.
