Hello, Does, or did, anyone make Rollerball miniatures in 25mm or larger? If not, are there suitable miniatures to convert into Rollerball figures? The rules of the game were published back in the 1970's, but is there a place where you can obtain them now? GreyONE

Phil Bowen's Phigs are inexpensive and could help you fit the "conversion bill" for some interesting-looking Rollerball players. Then, some multi-part plastic kits (Science Fiction oriented, mind you), could help you create a skate-team, while there are some motorcycle models (GW's, Void's--which look a lot more like they could fit on a "sports track") that you can use for your "tow-support" unit. Maybe you can even use some of the SuperFigs models (with a little conversion) to build your teams. If therules are still out there, it's pretty possible that Marcus King (of TintanGames) can have them. Cheers! |

Grey, I don't know if anyone ever made 'Rollerball' figures specifically, but Javier's come up with some interesting suggestions and ideas. I also didn't know that there were rules for the game published. I've thought about getting some figures together for a similar game (NOTHING beats the classic Rollerball, not that piece of Gen-X junk that came out a few years ago!), and I've watched that movie over and over again to try to learn what I could, and maybe I can pass along some observations I've made. First, the total game time played is 60 minutes, broken up into three 20 minute periods. I'm assuming that the clock is always running with no stoppage for time outs, penalties, injuries/deaths, etc. Second, the playing ring is divided into ten zones; five for one team and five for the other. They are labeled "1", "2", etc., and they are different in that one side had white numbers on black blocks and vise-versa on the other side. Third, I believe the scoring cones are on opposite sides of each other; I just don't know in which numerical zones they are in. There's supposed to be a site that someone set up that's somewhat of a shrine to the original movie, complete with memorabilia (including a listing of the Rollerball cities), but I am not able to find it at the moment. I'm hoping like heck that it wasn't axed, because it was a great resource for such a controversial and entertaining film. Keep your fingers crossed. |

They are in the middle of each team's zones (zonez 3 and 8, respectively). But a friend of mine did come uop with a comment about a version with various scoring cones in all the zones, worth 1 (outer), 2 (inner) and 3 (center) points, arranged within each of the team's sides. Where did he came up with that? I don't know, but sounds interesting and could build up to a real slugfest just to get the points scored. |

Trek down to Walmart, Kmart, etc and look for a set called Battle Ball. 25mm plastic figures that would work nicely and the game was going for $9 to $16. About 24 figures. Ed the THW guy www.twohourwargames.com |

"Game?! This wasn't meant to be a game! Never!" I hope you're talking about the original, with James Caan. I had high hopes for the remake, but what a piece of dreck that turned out to be! I found a few pictures of a Rollerball ( Razorball ) miniatures game on the net: link Looks like the miniatures might be Shadowforge Human and Elf Gridiron players, with rollerblades added. Since it's on the Eureka website, they might be able to tell you more. As for male miniatures, I don't think there's anything out there that's suitable without major modification. You want lightly padded guys on rollerskates, wearing American football helmets. GW Human Blood Bowlers might be the closest, but they'll require major "modernization". There might be some Shadowrun/Cyberpunk/Near-future minis that would fit the bill, but they'll all need skates. The easiest skates to add would be inline skates, just cut the mini off its base and add plastic strip and discs to represent the skates. Might not be too sturdy, though. Team Frog does separate skateboards to mount under minis; maybe you could e-mail them and see if they're willing to do separate skates ( traditional or inline ) . The Rollerball arena itself was a bicycle racing track ( velodrome ) in Munich, with appropriate modifications for the movie. Here's a good site with dimensions for a standard Olympic velodrome. It looks much bigger than the one in the movie; you'd probably want to compress it anyway for a playable game ( shorten the straights ) : link And if you like mood music for your games, you can't beat Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor. : |

There was a Rollerball game that showed up several times at HMGS events that was fantastic. It was made using converted cake decorations that were closer to 54mm. The rules got tweeked each time and by the end it was a fantastic set. I have photos of a game in progress (Houston vs. Madrid). |

By the way, an errata about the labeling of the track. They were not numbers, but letters ("A", "B", etc.). The black on white letters/vice versa still applies. Also, the track is halfed by a somewhat thick red line, where the "goals" are situated opposite each other, and numbered "1" and "2". It seems like the player that has the ball has to skate around the track a number of times (two, three?) before he can make a goal attempt. It was probably cinematic license that made it look like they skated around several times, but I'm sure the player had to skate around the track at least once before he could score a goal. Another observation I've made are the cities/teams mentioned or featured in the movie: Houston, Madrid, Tokyo, New York, Manila, Chicago, Rome, and Pittsburgh, but like I said there was a website up (as recently as a few months ago) that had a listing of Rollerball cities around the world. I'm still looking for it. Wish me luck. |

Reaper did a "roller girl" figure for a while...its out of production now...I'm sure if you ask nicely, they'd cast you a few...call them and see...I'd recommend only asking if you intend to ask for a team (like 10) as otherwise it wouldn't be worth anyone's time to do it...just my opinion, they are free to do as they want...:D -Paul @ Team Frog Studios ::and if I got enough requests, I'd finish the skates I was working on last year...:D :: |

EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS, PAUL! What about a Rollerfuzzball game?! Same savagery, just with cute animal getting whomped by the Kiev Bears or the Congo Gorillas? Shadowforge has alot of sporty girlies ready for action with a little conversion... Hmmm. I think I'm buying the DVD this weekend and start a game table project. |

What I'd like is some motorball figures, but I guess that won't come about unless I win a lottery and hire a sculptor... |

just thought I'd kick start this message board by linking to THIS: TMP link btw, the biggest hurdle I had with my Rollerball miniatures game (other than solving the incline construction problem) was the motorcyle figures. I eventually had to kitbash a bunch of Matchbox offroad cycles with lots of plastic and Sculpty clay

I know Scurvy was working on a set of rules for rollerderbies, and had someone lined up to do the figures. From what I have seen of the rules so far and the figures ideas, it looks pretty good – and should be able to do rollerball as well. |

Jape – very nice set up for the rollerball there – love teh arena. I can see the hassle you had with figures – but they work ok. |

I every time have a Movie uniform save for the skates and gloves(the retail skate versions cost $900 USD in 2001!!!!) Its a Bell Motorcycle Helmet with an old style QB face guard!!! The shoulder, chest and hip pads are European Hockey manufactured, the shinguards modified baseball catcher, and the gloves
Unknown and that was from sources who wrote and produced the movie!! I made close copies by using a candle factory to make an investment cast of a spike , (it was not the way to m ake numbers of 'em, then my trusty cousin lathed the rest and his Mom (top notch jewler, riveted them inside leather gloves.) Problem was that I was costantly spiking my face brushed it, drank a beer, or took the helmet off! And the bathroom trip was the trials of the damned!! |

Posting here, in case someone missed the 2009 announcement and stumbled across this old thread instead: Over the years I've gotten a lot of requests for my miniature rules for a certain violent future sport. After due consideration I finally decided to release my rules for free under Creative Commons licensing. You can now download the complete game from my site ( japenet.net in the games section ) as a PDF containing the rules, track sections and playing pieces -- all of which can be printed out on a standard color printer. Happy Holidays! |
