I have just got my copy and like all good gamers the first thing to do was a (not so quick) flick though to look at the figs!

I have a couple of questions

- The book says the figs are all Old Glory, Foundry or Dixons, I'm sure some look like Artizan. Could somebody confirm or deny?

- Has anyone got the Perry Earp figs, are they as good as they look?

- who makes the third from right figure in Pete's posse(that's not the Snake Skin Oil man but the "other right) and the central two p120?

- and the forth from right (duster and rifle) in Graham's p 121, also the deouty p 50?

- who makes the Mexican Bandido p102?

- the us Marshal p97?

- the rowdy page 53?

- scared cowboy p32?

Ok that's more than two

As you can see I also read the book backwards (a true gamer)

ps are the rules any good?

You have me intrigued.
What publication are you speaking about?

To answer your PS,
I played in several games of LotOW @ Origins.
I was thoroughly frustrated by the mechanic where my bullet must save to miss the corner of the building I was standing next to, followed by a save for the post holding the roof over the porch, finally making a save to get through a tumbleweed, finally striking my oppoment for no damage.
ymmv,
R.

Yeah, seconded on the above.

The combat rules in LotOW are very brief, and very simplistic.
The strong point of LotOW is it's 'Team selection' section and the campaign system. Great fun to put together (what you think will be) a winning posse, and follow it's exploits, developing the characters and engaging Hired Guns.

So LotOW isn't bad, but you're looking for a stronger, more detailed combat system, or if you intend playing mostly 'one-off' engagements, there are much better contenders.

TRWNN is a great game, very well presented in a superbly illustrated hardback. You get a lot for your money, too –
not least rules for indians & cavalry, which LotOW requires a supplement for.
And as Terrement points out, the basic version of TRWNN is still available as a free download, so you can try it out gratis.

I love 2-Hour Wargames' Six-gun Sound, but IMHO the original edition is a more straightforward and enjoyable game than the current ('Blaze of Glory') edition. The original was made available as a free download when the new edition replaced it, but I don't have a link to it.

If you want the campaign qualities 6GS Blaze of Glory is perfect. Excellent detail but not too much detail.

And (cheap shameless plug here), Gutshot has a nice little campaign system also…

wink

[Sorry if I veer a bit off-topic here]

Isn't Six Gun Sound and Gutshot a bit complex for many figures? I've only taken a brief glance, but it seems they are ill suited for fast skirmishes with more than a few figures on each side.

Norman D Landings18 Oct 2009 3:04 p.m. PST

Speaking from experience, 1st-edition Six-Gun Sound works fine with 4 groups of 4-6 characters per group. 2nd ed. (Blaze of Glory) is way more detailed, & as a consequence, noticeably slower.
I wouldn't include anything like as many characters in BoG.

From what I gather, Gutshot wasn't intended for all-out skirmish, and is specifically designed to handle just a few figures in detail.

Geez! Talk about a topic getting hijacked…..this is the worst in a long time! I know he added the PS, but for goodness sake….look at the topic!

Sorry, No, I cannot confirm those figures as I do not have the rules to check. While Minifigs DOES have figures like you describe in 15mm, I doubt those guys would publish anything less that 25mm for westerns.

Depends…how many figures are you using for your skirmish? We've seen that the engine runs smoothly with a dozen or so figs/players. It can get slow afterward, but there are modification to allow more larger fights to go on.

Henrix19 Oct 2009 1:33 a.m. PST

A dozen is ok, even if I was thinking more about a dozen or two, Murphy.

Sorry for the offtopicness. The OP did get some answers, though not all, in his other thread where he asked the exact same thing, however. ;-)

TRWNN does no function well when you get a lot of guys with muskets. Fun game for small scale action tho'.

CooperSteveOnTheLaptop19 Oct 2009 10:50 a.m. PST

Remember some Foundry are by Mike Owen – they could very well 'look like Artizan'!!!

The timeframe of TRWNN is such that muskets shouldn't really be present. My son's ongoing character started with a long rifle which was black powder. However, those weapons should be pretty rare. I have had games of 20-30+ characters in almost every game I have ever run. The games last about 3 hours.

Thanks,

John

They are routinely present in LotOW, especially for peons, indians, mountain men

TRWNN does many things well. But yeah, it doesn't really handle units of musket armed men. That's not what the rules are for. Replicating the action you see in the movies is where TRWNN can't be beat. You can repllicate any movie character using the various abilities available. I have yet to play or read any other Old West set that does.

My games usually have a decent amount of peons in it as NPC's. They are usually armed with knives, machete's or the occasional firearm.

Thanks,

John
