Here's a question, what minis could fill in for a martian. I was thinking maybe some sort of orc with some sort of hand weapon. Or really any fantasy figure--elves, dwarves etc.

Comments?

Elves would be best but there are a number of companies that make martians now.

I'm very picky about the fantasy minis I put on the gaming table next to historicals. Most fantasy ranges tend to be more cartoony with oversized weapons. This is fine within its own genre but to my eye looks a bit silly next to historicals.

That said, I use one of Black Tree's elf ranges (they have two or three different elf ranges) for my Martians. They have sensible sized weapons and look great if painted non-elfy colours. I gave mine green skin with red, purple and gold attire.

For VSF gaming I have seen GW's LOTR Uruk Hai used with good effect for this purpose.

I would use Privateer Press's Skorne from the Hordes game.

Their armor, weapons, and monsters all scream VSF mars to me. Especially their ranged troops, the venators. They're armed with cone-shaped needle guns, not bows or crossbows.

I forgot to add-in 15mm…

Elves would be good as more "advanced" martian IMO and orcs as a "primative" martian.

I'm looking to go on the cheap to get lots of figures on the table…

I don't think 15mm elves are much cheaper than 15mm Martians – see Black Hat and Peter Pig (in the Fantasy Range) for Martians.

True, and I love both lines…I guess I need an excuse to buy more figures….

Michael,

Here is a tiny thumbnail of Moria Goblins next to some 1/72 Italeri crusaders:

Somehow, I can't pull up the regular size one any longer.

Martians are my Martians of choice.

Twilight Creations makes some good ones. Check out their website or my blog for photos.

I'm not a big fan of "Mars Attacks" type aliens.

CC, I like those goblins…may have to look at them better.

SamPearce13 Oct 2009 1:54 p.m. PST

Some of the Dark Elves available from mirliton.it fairly closely resemble the Canal Martians from the Space:1889 games – you might check them out for "fuedal, armored" Martians as opposed to "octopod" or "tribal" Martians…

LTC Fraiser13 Oct 2009 4:40 p.m. PST

What about figures for the Martians as presented in Stirling's "In the Courts of the Martian Kings"? Anyone make something that might work? Average height 6' 6" so figure 45 – 50 mm (where humans are 35 – 45 mm or roughly "40 mm" figures), slender with narrower hips on average and somewhat deeper & wider chest and proportioned as humans. (As they should be, since they're an interfertile human variety.) Faces similar although a bit longer with cats pupil eyes and larger mobile ears. Some without noses, but large nasal openings and night-adapted eyes – Deep Desert Dwellers if you will – although a generic flat face with cloth facial covering would work. And while I'm wishing, some of the larger biologicals like engines and the Paitang and Denming birds and "rodents of unusual size" and … oh, well, just somewhere that might have the principal figures of human and Martian please. Anywhere?

Yes, Cacique Caribe,

That link.

Photos are not my best work, but a good comparison with the Casear Miniatures photo.

Good news from Twilight Creations, they are going to release the Martians figures as a separate set. Probably in a few months. If their other sets are any guide, they will sell for about $10 USD for 100 figures. Pretty cheap price.

"about $10 USD USD for 100 figures"

Wow!!!

for 20mm plastics, how about these?

Hat Industrie Sea Peoples. I'm using them for fantasy.

In 15mm I have considered using Sea Peoples and even Mohicans for Martians.

I like the idea of the GW Moria Goblins as primitive Martians, because all of their armor is so alien-looking (not just the helmets):

Plus, they are taller than my 15-17mm figures, which makes them all the more threatening.
