Ok so I have had the hard cover of the last version of clan war on my shelf for a number of years now.( Daimyo edition I think) Now I remember not really getting into it because I had a hard time painting samurai at the time. However over the years I have become a much better painter, and have started to contemplate getting back into it.

Since its an OOP game, it can be hard to find the minis for it, and every time I do they are much more expensive then other OOP games that I dabble in. So back to my original question. Is Clan War any good, and if so is it worth the hassle and cost of acquiring the miniature to build 2 armies(crab and lion) so that my friends and I can play the odd game here and there?

Jay Arnold12 Aug 2009 1:44 a.m. PST

I enjoyed it. It was a bit more layered than other mass battle games. By this I mean there will multiple decisions to be made, both pre-battle and during it. Matching units with characters and tactical deck to get the most out of them was a challenge. Then deciding which unit, character or card to use and when was interesting as well. It's the most fun I've had playing a mass combat fantasy game.

I played Dragon Clan and enjoyed customizing my Ise Zumi tattooed warriors.

Since its an OOP game, it can be hard to find the minis for it

However, there are plenty of historical Samurai miniatures out there, that could be used for the more mundane troop types.

WKeyser12 Aug 2009 2:09 a.m. PST

I agree with Jay it is the most intresting and multileveled mass fantasy game I have tried. Lots of options with the tactical card draw and how you build your deck along with the troops you have in your army.

I really like it, as to the figures if you watch ebay you can always find figs which often go less than the orignale price.

Also check out the yahoo group and ask around for figs the guys on the list are always willing to help.

Excellent game. I ran a number of comps for it and it was always well supported. Crab and Lion are two excellent clans as well, says he who has both!

Oninotaki12 Aug 2009 4:47 a.m. PST

@Griefbringer I knew there was something I forgot to ask in my initial post. Does anyone have any recomendations for nice 25 mm Japanese minis that would fill the role of generic clan war troops? I think it would be cool to mix them so that the more specialized clan stuff really stands out. I am secretly hoping that one of these companies that is pumping out plastic historicals will start doing some Japanese ones lol

@Noraneko thanks for the link! Do you happen to know if what valiant carries is a limited supply of original casts, or if they are people now making them?

@WKeyser you dont happen to know the exact name of that group do you?

For everybody else, any tips on how you went about making your cards, because all I have is the ones in the book, and since its a hard cover its incredibly hard to just copy pages. Are there any PDF's of the cards out there that I can print the cards off of?

Thanks everyone for the information, it was not what I expected at all!

TMPer Alxbates has a bunch of Clan War stuff he was selling at a decent price. You might try to send him a message.

Jana Wang12 Aug 2009 6:44 a.m. PST

Somebody picked up the 25mm Reaper Daimyo line and is currently selling it. I don't remember who, though.

Ral Partha, now Ironwind, also had a selection of 25mm Japanese. I don't know if they are on the new website, but you can email and ask if they are still available. If they can hunt down the mold they can cast them for you. I think most of the staff will be at GenCon this week, though.

It was a fun game. We usually left out more of the obvious fantasy stuff and played it somewhat historical.

Also, can't go wrong with Perry. The best samurai stuff currently available, IMHO.

Crane is the best ;)

Jay Arnold12 Aug 2009 8:50 a.m. PST

TMP member jizbrand was selling some painted units about a year ago. Don't know if they're still available.

TMP member aecurtis was also selling a number of blisters, as well.

I like the Old Glory Japanese for run of the mill units as well. Their peasants mix nicely with AEG heroes. I used to use two units of thirty as "anvil units" to tie up enemy units, then smash them from the side with a heavy Dragon unit as the "hammer."

Rogzombie Fezian12 Aug 2009 10:09 a.m. PST

I have some Crab stuff, probably enough for an army including the oni and guy with crab claw. Sorry I forget their names. If you are interested please email me thru ebay-rogcollectibles.

markshu12 Aug 2009 2:43 p.m. PST

I have a variety of CW minis I was just counting up to list for sale, and I should have enough Lion and Yoritomo figures for a couple of good "starter armies". PM or email (markshu at markshu.com) if you're interested.

Admiral Yi Sun Sin is my Homie12 Aug 2009 3:04 p.m. PST

It's still the best fantasy game I have played. Worst mistake I made was selling my fully painted Crab Clan & almost painted Phoenix Clan forces.

Oninotaki12 Aug 2009 6:45 p.m. PST

Ok let me make sure I got this correct:

-Valiant has some official Clan War minis

-Game Figures Inc now cast the old Reaper Daimyo line which is some minis from the clan war RPG?

-Perry Miniatures make really good historical samurai

-Kingsford also make really good historical samurai that are a little taller than perry miniatures(this I got from the classical asian warfare board)

-Old Glory also has fantastic historicals, but requires a $50 USD yearly membership to order from them?

Does anyone have pictures of how all these different ranges look together? Does anyone mix more than one range with their clan war?

mdauben12 Aug 2009 8:40 p.m. PST

I loved Clan War and thought it was probably the best fantasy mass battle game I ever tried. I was so Bleeped texted when the game went OOP, both at L5R for dropping it so unexpectedly and at all the local gamers who lost any interest in it as soon as it fell off the "new releases" shelf at the shop.

I was so into it that I had four different armies and every monster they made, totally hundred of figures. Unfortunatly, during one of several recent cross-country moves the box with all my old Clan War books and miniatures was lost. Sob.

Xintao12 Aug 2009 8:51 p.m. PST

I love Clan Wars. Only played a few games before it went OOP. Normally I wouldn't let that stop me, but no one I know played it.

Cheers, Xin

Clan War was one of my favorite games until the Seattle area group eventually dissolved, and I was one of the official playtesters for the 2nd Ed Daimyo Edition rules.

I seem destined to be attracted to "maginal" gaming systems.

Oninotaki13 Aug 2009 9:43 a.m. PST

@Markshu you dont happen to know if the 2nd edition Daimyo rules include all the rules for each army from their respective army books do you? Basically if I have the Daimyo edition hardcover do I need any of the old army books to have all the rules for an army?

markshu13 Aug 2009 11:14 a.m. PST

The Daimyo Edition (2nd ed CW rules) contains everything you need to run a game. All of the rules, force cards from all the clans, tac cards, spells, etc – everything is printed in the book (even has a painting guide <g>). To use the Tac cards you'll have to construct them if you can't find them for sale, but all of the info needed is in the Daimyo Edition book. Personally, I've recreated the Daimyo Tac cards by buying a bunch of Magic "commons" for super cheap and then applying computer-printed labels over the top of them.

Farstar13 Aug 2009 4:41 p.m. PST

-Valiant has some official Clan War minis

Don't know about that. The last folks I was aware of with the Clan War moulds was Magnificent Egos, a company with some bad history.

-Old Glory also has fantastic historicals, but requires a $50 USD USD yearly membership to order from them?

Not required, no, but a really good deal if you are going to order a lot.

Oninotaki15 Aug 2009 10:01 a.m. PST

@Farstar does that mean the prices listed on their website are discounted 40% if you have the 50 dollar membership?

@Markshu thanks for all the answers, you have been very helpful!

@Everybody else thanks for all the comments and info, you have gotten a friend and I all fired up to play a game that has been in the back of our heads as a game that we would get too someday lol

Hi folks, just come across this thread. I'm starting to put pics of painted Clan Wars figures on my blog, which is usually 25/28mm ancients:

link

So far, it's the Unicorn clan. I don't have all of those I painted, having passed some over to the guy who bought them a while ago, but if you want some idea of how they look, please go ahead. Incidentally, another manufacturer who did fantasy Japanese figures was Dixon Miniatures, and some of the old Ral Partha D&D miniatures were Oriental Adventures types. I wish I had my collection of figures for Bushido, but they're still on loan to the guy for whom I'm painting the Clan Wars stuff. Normally, I'm either a role-player or mass battles gamer – 300 figs plus per side in 25mm. I didn't get into Clan Wars myself, so I can't really comment about the game itself; sorry!

"does that mean the prices listed on their website are discounted 40% if you have the 50 dollar membership?"

Unless a line has been exempted (which should be spelled out clearly somewhere, given how transparent OG usually is), yes, that is the case.

Oninotaki16 Aug 2009 8:59 p.m. PST

@Farstar Holy crap thats a great deal then! Especially for their 25mm Samurai 30 packs! Thanks for clarifying it.

fitterpete17 Aug 2009 4:54 p.m. PST

The Westwind Samurai are kinda nice but they are a bit larger and more exspensive than the regular old glory stuff(still cheap with the 40% off).I mix them in with my clan war figures.

Oninotaki18 Aug 2009 6:58 p.m. PST

@ fitterpete thanks for directing me to the westwind samurai I like the looks of them, but I am confused are you saying that they can be gotten at 40% off too?
