Just try doing a WW2 game without it and see how well it's received. |
| helmet101 | 05 Aug 2009 3:42 p.m. PST |
sure, Bob, but let me be perplexed about the type of "effort to get some of that history across". Especially when this effort is projecting without any sense of perspective all the SS die sets, Swatiska T-Shirt, and other kewl stuff. One of my favorite the uber cool Croatian auxiliary troops
IMO, BF oozes an unhealthy doze of nazi regalia that I find questionable for "educational" or marketing purposes. Just my two cents |

Yep, welcome to the fun house Schwerpunkt. |

Battlefront used to be, at least it seemed, hesitant to put out much SS, Hitler Jugend and similar stuff. Now they're putting it out regularly, although, arguably, in accordance with a historical timeline. I suppose one can't argue that it's a historical game if they leave out important parts of history. Even if Battlefront put anything with a swastika in a shrink-wrapped box and required a signature acknowledging the evils of the nazis in WW2, I don't think it would stop the types of people that are into all the regalia one bit. Nor would it deter schoolboys out after the cool toys. Here again, I don't think that education is really a company's role. That said, I do find some of it a bit perverse. That's not the sort of thing I prefer to game. But then I go and play Soviets. - Bob |

Not to distract from making unwarranted assumptions about anybody based on the rules that they play, but there is some good stuff going on over there as well: link Yes, there are spelling and grammatical errors. Get past 'em and keep reading. - Bob |

allot the complexity thing comes from this, kids that "just wanna blow stuff up" and have sub par history education.Thats why I am so strong in my dislike for FoW. Fan Boys are a pain. Send them a Play station. link ugghhhh |

kids that "just wanna blow stuff up" and have sub par history education. Yes, let's prevent children from playing hockey because they haven't heard of Bobby Orr or Phil Esposito. Don't allow kindergarten kids to play soccer/football until they have learned about Pelee. Until then they are just fanboys, worthy of our contempt. Geez, in my 20s, I played in and organized military soccer matches and didn't know what the heck Mancester United was until about ten years ago. I obviously had no right playing the game. No wonder all those guys on the Airborne sidelines were sneering at me when my regiment played the Canadian Airborne Regiment – I understand now, it was because we didn't know the history behind soccer. Sub-par education on any subject, sport or game, should disqualify any person from enjoying it, everyone knows that! Maybe we could send such people to an island somewhere. -- Tim |

And right on time to show exactly what I mean. More then any rules issue, the fanatic Fan Boys. |

If SG would read the thread, he's appreciate just how humorous his comments are. Since he's got me d, I can just sit here and provide play-by-play narrative. How many variations of spelling of "Fan Boy" will we see? And will the Flaming Badger Rampant make a repeat appearance? Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of

"Even if FoW serves as a "gateway drug" for a kid's interest in history, good! At least it gets them pointed in the right direction!" Pointed the in the same direction as Apocalypse Now would point toward Vietnam War history |
| bobstro | 07 Aug 2009 11:37 a.m. PST |
My favorite Apocalypse Now memory: Back in the day, I used to sell HiFi and electronics gear at the PX. I remember having that movie playing on a (then) big screen -- a Sony projection screen playing the movie off of a Beta tape. I remember one young serviceman walking up with his young kids right as the Ride of the Valkyries was starting up, and as the frontal shot of the helos was playing, him saying "Look kids, that's what daddy does!" I have to think those kids took daddy a lot more seriously after that! - Bob |

Sub-par education on any subject, sport or game, should disqualify any person from enjoying it, everyone knows that! Maybe we could send such people to an island somewhere. Would there also be enough room on that island for people with sub-par spelling, grammar and punctuation? |

I had an otherwise unremarkable high school history teacher whose name I cannot recall right now, but who did teach WWII history to me in about 1981 or so. I remember a question on her final exam which was this: "It is November, 1941. You are an allied soldier in North Africa. You see an Italian soldier. Do you shoot him or not. Why?" I smile when I think of what the politically correct school boards of today would say if this question appeared on a test today. |

I am not a FOW player; not my game at all. I am happy, though, to see kids playing that as an albeit flawed gateway to what I'll call more thoughtful wargames. Better that than all fantasy/sci-fi, at least it is a token nod to history. Not all of them will remain in the hobby, but years from now some of them will be our fellow historical wargamers. Jim |

The only person ever born knowing everything was Allen and we all know how some of you feel about him. The rest of us had to learn this stuff, nearly all on our own, outside of school, because our curiosity on the subject matter overcame our better sensibilities. So lay off those who haven't learned yet. Try to be helpful. |
