What kind of Vehicle would the crew use in the post Apocalyptic World, before space travel? Serenity was a cargo vessel, so a tank wouldn't work. Maybe a modified eighteen wheeler truck?

I would say something like this from the movie "Land of the Dead".

They called it the "Dead Reckoning".

Considering the influences, a conestoga wagon would be more likely. :)

Now now, Andrew.

They had some advanced tech on the inner planets.

So, are we talking about Earth-that-was before everyone bugged out?

"Dead Reckoning" is dead on IMHO. Room for a small crew, weapons, etc.

Yeah, but they hardly ever went there (only once, IIRC).

More seriously, Firefly was a western IN SPAAACE!. Since a post-apocalyptic scenario tends to suggest IN SPAAACE! is not an option, that leaves … a western. grin

I'd go with an 18 wheeler with some guns and armor added to it. Not as over the top as Dead Reckoning or the Dreadnought from Death Race 3000 as they'd need the room/weight for crew and cargo. To keep the Firefly theme, they might have a pair of escort vehicles instead of the shuttles. If Inara's van is a-rockin, don't come a-knockin'. ;)

Present day truck drivers think they are cowboys. Motorcycle gangs are outlaws. motorcycle cops are marshals. The Western myth permeates our culture. So Western in the Zombie/post nuclear attack age is not far-fetched.
