I've been reading this list and it might be interesting to get into this.
Who makes planes and what are the best rules?

Boeing and Airbus are the big two….

Being serious, narrow it down a bit – any scale preferences, period? This board covers 1946 to present day, and good rules for Korea, say will likely be hopeless for Vietnam or later.

For the period you list you might also consider 1/700. You can get a lot of the jets fairly cheaply from the plastic makers like Pit Road/Skywave, Tamiya, and Aoshima. Pit Road also makes some lovely aircraft in metal but the cost is high.

Or 1/144 as plastic kits are becoming more readily available than they were say 5 or 10 years ago. That and the Japanese Gashpon kits are big and show NO sign of slowing down. Here are some manufacturers
