I first saw the pig-faced orcs on the cover of the 1979 D&D module "Keep on the Borderlands." Likely this was designed as the AD&D Monster Manual was in 1979.

Contrast and compare with 'The House on the Borderland' link
and the description of swine-things. I think the orcs from 'keep' were an homage.

And a quote from later on in the story…

I am looking at a vast, misty swine-face, over which fluctuates a flamboyant flame, of a greenish hue.

Ha ha CC! If I get a chance, and some decent photos, I'll post pics. But no promises for the next two weeks. I got a hell of a busy time at work right now.

Note that the big orc on the left has *very* green skin, as does the guy in the centre with his back to us. I vaguely recall posters from that calendar being distributed at 1977 Playboy club GenCon, or perhaps it was the 78 U Wisconsin one.

But I have a feeling that traditions of beast-man hybrids go back pretty far, predating Tolkien by a long shot. Why worry? pig-faced orcs look good to me.

Cheers, --- Wheldrake
