I'm looking for a two sides of A4 style fast play ruleset for the transistional steam / early ironclad era. I've got a Tumbling Dice 1/2400 French fleet and would like to be able to use around 20+ models per side without loads of bookkeeping, time or complicated maths.

Any suggestions?

De Bellis Navalis by Colin Standish?

These are a great set of rules, I can't recommend them highly enough. I've done the whole of Tshushima in an hour with them.

DBA with battleships, so no complicated book-keeping, tracking each shell etc. Very clever C3 system which encourages manouvre by formations, not individual ships.

The fast-play rules by Ben King would work perfectly for you:

I'll need to check which set has a suitable fleet list for you. They do have a bit of simple damage tracking but are otherwise quick to learn/teach and playable in a few hours.

I will second the recommendation of the De Bellis Navalis rules. Good fun for those of us who are not into all the details of naval warfare and ship charts. I have one of the sets of Ben Kings rules also and find that if you want a bit more detail without going to General Quarters or SeaKrieg that they work well but they do require a bit more than the one page A4 requirement you desire.

What about Phil Barker's Damn Battleships Again.

Has anyone played DBSA and could comment on them? I downloaded and read the rules. Not sure of the impact of Barkerese but I was not inspired enough to try them. Im always looking for a good simple predred game and they could be it. The basing in particular didnt do much though I have to admit it is probably more realistic than anything I am used to.

I actually have played several games with them. While I prefer using Grand Fleets by MJ 12 I have found my large games using DBSA to be fast and fun. They have a subtle amount of detail in them which surprised me. They do have a decent following. There are a LOAD of supporting materials and Orders of Battle for Russo-Japanese and Span Am amongst others at the Yahoo group. They are worth a look!

Thanks,

John

I ignore the basing.

Thanks,

Thanks,

DBN looks promising. A lot of pre-dreadnaught rules seem to be too late for what I'm thinking of but may be worth a look.

There's the old set of rules Tom Wham and I wrote back in the '70s called (believe it or not) "Ironclad," if you can still find a copy: just a few half-sized pages in a little green booklet.
