OK, so I got this wild idea doing a skirmish campaign, based on the movie Red Dawn
So here's what I was thinking ..: 1/72/20 mm .Probably mainly plastics.because its cheapest and I think all the necessary units are readily available and most of my current terrain is in this scale
I was thinking I'll need: maybe 10 or 20 partisans, a few RPG poses, AK47s, and various small arms like hunting rifles, etc (there was at least one person using a bow & arrow at one point in the movie) . Some horses.. and a few of the partisans will have to be ladies
2 or 3 platoons/company of 80s era russians -- One contingent will represent the Cubans. For vehicles, I'm not sure what the models are but at least 1 or 2 tanks from the era, I noticed several APC's in the movie as well, some other softskin transport, and various other heavy weapons, guns, etc
Possibly A couple of American tanks to redo the tank-battle scene when the partisans are close assaulting the russian tanks during the battle
A was also thinking about getting one of those russian winged helicopters that shows up in one of the scenes at the end
. Plan was to string together a few skirmishes based on the action which takes place throughout the movie
I thought I might use NUTs! for the ruleset
So, can anyone help with/recommend additional ideas, specific models which would be best to serve the purpose? Thanks in advance

Wolverines get hidden movement up to point-blank range. Wolverines can only be killed on a roll of 13 with 2d6. If a female Wolverine gets killed, all male Wolverines go berserk and get both shooting and melee bonuses (i.e. automatic kills). |

Helicopter- Hind 24-D Italeri version available -in the film it was a Super Puma (French helo) Tanks- T55 and/or T64's- Esci -cheapish plastic kits APC's -BTR-60's (8 wheelers) Ace plastic kits (can be 'difficult' to build!) Russian trucks available from ICM/Omega, 'Nuts' should work too! |

In the film, the Soviets used ZSU-23-4 Shilka antiaircraft vehicles, T-72 tanks, BTR-70 & BMP-2 apc's. |

That would make an interesting game of Ambush Alley, where the "good guys" were the Insurgent forces for a change! Interesting idea. |

'Ambush Dawn' – I've seriously considered it. Since one of the things I want to do with AA is Afghanistan, the same Soviets should do fine for it. Then again, I've also considered a US vs. domestic insurgency circa 1975, so the terrain would be about the same

Forces of Valor 1/72nd scale would work for the tanks. |

You will need an M42 "Duster" That was the wreaked vehicle the Wolverines walked around durring the movie. The Duster in the movie came from the New Mexico National Guard at the time. I was a Duster Crewman in Florida when the movie came out. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M42_Duster Good luck on your project, I hear they are making a remake of the movie soon.

sorry. Spent a few minutes comparing Alanis' version vs Fergies'. For me Alanis wins.
PLENTY of 1/72nd die cast (Forces of Valor, Hobby Master
) available for many things (no Shilka though) through Bad Cat Toys or The Motor Pool link themotorpool.net with model kits for specific things, or go resin for somethings to round it out. The 20mm Liberation Balkans stuff would give you some models in civilians carrying AKs and the like. From Syr Hobbs in the US. Think FAA has / had some Cubans in their Grenada range (Combat Miniatures)
. hmm, couldn't find them at quick glance. link link Sorry for the musical interlude :) Chalfant |

Interesting. For the Wolverines in 1/72 plastic you may want to check Orion Chechen Rebels (72002) link Counterintuitive I know but they have female figures and are all warmly dressed. They may even help fill both roles, one of them kind of reminds me of Gen. Bratchenko. For the Russians and Cubans, if you can find them the Esci 1/72 Warsaw Pact Troops link are pretty good, one really looks like the Colonel Bella. I am sure there is also a lot of good stuff in metal. Hope this helps. |

Heya, Keith
maybe we could run a game like this with DH/C7B – SOCWAD sometime. I have plenty of Soviet stuff, just would need some US insurgents, probably a few packs from the Liberation Balkans range I mentioned. And the Hind. Pretty much have to go with a model kit (egads). Every aircraft model I put together looks like it crashed already. Though I don't use plastic 1/72nd anymore (sold them all) I'd back Jimmy214 on the Esci Warsaw Pact troops
though weapons mix is not quite right for the number of models, and I don't like the "some in NBC most in not", the figures are quite nice, pretty detailed, and would work very well for the project, including the SMG model. I am not familiar with the Orion stuff. Chalfant ps, for those that dare

Thanks guys for all the great advice and suggestions so far guys! You've been a great help!! Also, I just remembered, there was an American helicopter with rocket launchers on it in the opening scene
It looked almost like Vietnam era
. any idea the model? |
nvdoyle | 24 Jan 2009 12:50 p.m. PST |
That was, I think, a UH-1 with side-mounted rocket pods. Took out a BTR checkpoint the boys were headed to. |
Chalfant | 24 Jan 2009 2:41 p.m. PST |
nvdoyle has it right
though in early-mid 80's not sure how many UH-1s would still be equipped this way? More of a Vietnam era thing. That'd been an awful fast jury rigged weapons system following the timeline of the movie. Also Hueys strafing the town at night. But I am not sure
? Maybe the producers could afford to rent a Huey, and not a Cobra? Chalfant |
Pizzagrenadier | 24 Jan 2009 3:36 p.m. PST |
Chal: That would be a really fun game. Remind me to buy some Insurgents from that range when we go to Cold Wars. I have actually been thinking about picking some up anyway for a game like this after I saw some of the packs on the Guild Forum a while back (a sweet eye candy forum). The cool thing about the movie is that you don't just have to do insurgents vs Sovs either. There are plenty of suggested scenarios from the conversation they had with the downed pilot about how the whole invasion panned out. I would imagine a lot of US infantry in any Cold War era gear would work for National Guard units, etc. etc. Slap some US looking model railroad houses down (especially the cheap Plasticville stuff) and you have a 1950-1980 looking Anywhere USA town

I saw this film for the first time two or three weeks ago. I was sure I wouldn't like it but I was wrong. it had something about it which really appealed. A remake would be very interesting (if done right.) |

UH-1N to be exact, used by the AF, Navy and Marines. I don't have a copy of the movie anymore so I can't check, but I think the ones shown are in AF markings. I know in the '80s that some AF SpecOps units flew UH-1Ns, so it's possible they were meant to represent aircraft from one of them. |

In the movie Behind Enemy Lines, Admiral Reigert leads his Marines to the rescue in a flight of Hueys. I figure there's a fleet of prop Hueys in Hollywood and a Cayuse or two that will fly as long as they can get gigs. |

Whatever system you use there has to be a special rule that whenever wolverines are shooting they should get a bonus to his if they players yells "WOLVERINES!!!" while rolling the dice. I thought of this part way through a Red Dawn skirmish game I ran last night (didn't implement it
next time
). Pics and AAR can be seen here: link |

We began gaming the Modern European War using the new Britannia 20mm tanks and vehicles. But since I live in Ponder, Texas, I bought a couple of Plasticville buildings, bought a Sheridan, M113, and an M48
and the Texas National Guard was fighting the Nicaraguan/Cuban/Spetsnatz horde! And for the Wolverines? I used an F-100 Pickup truck with Afghan soldiers
Why? Because Patrick Swayze was wearing the head wrap of an Arab in the movie! And the pickup was a bonus. It was quite fun at 22mm since each vehicle represented one model and man to man in the streets of Ponder! My only problem is to find a real reason for the Rooskies to invade my town
.Maybe they got lost looking for I-35N on their way to Oklahoma City to Kansas City to break the I-70 Denver to St. Louis supply line. Now that is one hell of a scenario! : ) |
