I don't know what happened to my initial post (darn Feds), but thank goodness for the edit function.

Here it is again . . .

Selective nuking:

For wargaming purposes ONLY, I would say Mecca, Jerusalem and Rome . . . just to bring about a war where most of the world would be involved in, particularly if the nukes contain traces of US and Chinese Uranium/Plutonium.

Of course, the nukes would have been previously stolen by a group from one of the "victim" nations or groups, just to frame the US or China.

. . . or by an evil mastermind like DR. EVIL!!!

Again, this is all just for wargaming purposes, of course. :)

PS. Big nukes. With "lasers". Failure is NOT an option:

Again, just for wargaming purposes.

My Mother in Law is literally an Olde Battle Axe…so she counts…except her house is five miles from mine…I'd have to be away at the time. Italy looks good this time of Century!

It would be an interesting study to assign probabilities of level of response to all involved who have nukes and see how fast it took to render the surface of the earth sterile.

I've often wondered what the long-term effect would be if the Promised Land was turned into an uninhabitable vitrified radioactive desert.

Certainly in the short term there would be lots of finger-pointing and huge amounts of blood shed on all sides, even those not directly involved.

But in the long term, would Christians, Jews, and Muslims still fight each other over it, if they knew they could never live there?

Would they believe that God (in whatever form) would someday return and restore the land to its former state, or even turn it into a garden paradise on Earth, and then they could live there once again?

Or would they begin mutually coveting some other patch of ground in the Middle East or elsewhere?

I'm certainly not advocating that this occur, and I'm not trying to start a political or religious flame war. I'm genuinely curious about how such an event would affect the believers of these three major Western religions.

Cacique Caribe09 Jan 2009 2:53 p.m. PST

Short term: Chaos
Long term: They would all try to make some "sense" of it, advocating a purpose of sorts within the scope of their beliefs. That's how beliefs evolve when prophecies result in disappointment (from previous interpretation). They get re-interpreted.

Back on topic . . . Austin Powers, Derek Flint and James Bond would have to combine forces in order to derail all three attempts, wouldn't they?

Didn't Dr. Evil's organization have a name or acronym, something similar to SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion) of the James Bond films?

I think that was SMERSH

SMERSH (Russian: СМЕРШ, acronym of SMERt' SHpionam, Russian: СМЕРть Шпионам, English: Death to Spies) were the counter-intelligence departments in the Soviet Army created in 1943

Warrenss209 Jan 2009 4:55 p.m. PST

He would use his time machine to go back in time and create an evil organization called…

Choas, Revolutions, And Pandemonium!!!

Answer: See what sign says 6:15 into this video

Why not have a summit of all thw world leaders in Jerusalem, the football world cup final in Rome and the haji in Mecca at the same time. Then nuke 'em using a Chinese bomb on Jerusalem, a Pakistani bomb on Rome and an Amercian bomb on Mecca.

I think that should upst just about everyone.

Cacique Caribe10 Jan 2009 12:13 a.m. PST

LOL. Particularly the interruption of the World Cup Finals!

I think the only safe place left would be North Korea. Not Christain, Jewish or Islamic, crap at football and don't attend world summits.

Can anyone answer a question I have often had regarding "rogue" nukes -- is it possible after a nuclear blast to determine just WHERE the device came from, if no one claims credit? How would anyone know who to blame if a large city somewhere suddenly was vaporized? Could the guilty party get away with it if they kept quiet and there was no immediately obvious suspect?

I mean, what if someone wanted to frame an enemy for an act of nuclear terrorism -- could they do so via an atomic weapon, or do they leave "fingerprints" that would allow their origin to always be determined conclusively?

This has a lot of impact on the issue of rogue groups, missing nuclear weapons, weapons possible sold or traded on the black market, etc.

Covert Walrus10 Jan 2009 4:12 p.m. PST

Piper909, I think you can 'fingerprint' atomic wepons and determine the technology used which will give you some idea who built it. More importnatly, the method of delivery would be a huge pointer as well – Missile or rocket, Davy Crocket-style mortar or artillery piece, suicide plane, truck mounted, suitcase or assembly on site could probably be crucial in finding out who did the deed.

jpattern210 Jan 2009 5:20 p.m. PST

As Walrus says, yes. Not just the tech and delivery method, but also the fissionables themselves – a radioactive fingerprint.
