Decades ago I saw a map that purported to show Soviet first-, second-, and third-strike nuke targets in the continental US. In addition to the expected major cities, ports, and military installations, I was surprised to see so many smaller cities and towns targeted, especially since other nearby small cities and towns were not targeted. Then I realized that most of the targeted small cities and towns boast universities, colleges, community colleges, private schools, etc. The map might have been completely bogus, but it was still eye-opening. |

And, yes, I lived in a first-strike zone. |

For wargaming purposes ONLY, I would say Mecca, Jerusalem and Rome . . . just to bring about a war where most of the world would be involved in, particularly if the nukes contain traces of US and Chinese Uranium/Plutonium. Of course, the nukes would have been previously stolen by a group from one of the "victim" nations or groups, just to frame the US or China. Again, just for wargaming purposes. :) CC PS. This almost sounds like a DR. NO or DR. EVIL scheme, to be discussed at this other thread, so as not to hijack this one: TMP link |

Well, I'm a relatively safe distance from a hit to my local nuke magnet city near by. As long as it's not hit by anything bigger than a 1.4 mt bomb, but that Tsar bomb. That's just over kill. The entire county removed from the map. |
Covert Walrus | 09 Jan 2009 6:47 p.m. PST |
Jony, try the smallest three levels that should do the business. Gee, my city is a really survivable place when hit with small-yield jobs in the downtown area – Lot like LA I suppose. But drop a 'roid on the town and it's not a good look for the Aussies either! |

Wonderful, I can hit my Vice Chancellor's office with a 1.4 megaton bomb and my house survives. Unfortunately I can not get my Dean of School's office without hitting my house. |

"I doubt most Protestants would go to war over Rome being nuked. Be horrorified maybe but that's it. Unfortunately, I know a few who would be rejoicing. Never understood that mindset. I don't think most Catholics would want to go to war either. Rome isn't the kind of sacred site that Mecca or Jerusalem is, and anyway, most modern Catholics just aren't that fanatical. |
Frederick | 10 Jan 2009 3:49 p.m. PST |
As to the Soviet target lists, population centres were a class D target (i.e. after A, B and C – these being nuclear missile/bomber sites, command/control and energy production) – although, given the size of their arsenal, they still would have had a lot of class D targets Most estimates I have heard with respect to the Pakistani nuclear arsenal are that it has between 50 and 80 warheads, mostly in the 5 to 30 kiloton yield range (the Hiroshima bomb was 15 kt) I would concur that Catholics won't go to war over Rome being bombed, in part because, after all, there is no Catholic army – the more problematic situation is if a nuke goes off on Israeli soil, for which the most likely response would be, to put it mildly, most unfortunate |
Covert Walrus | 10 Jan 2009 4:08 p.m. PST |
Frederick, isn't there some Catholic organistaion that has a lot of military personnel in it worldwide? Or is that some conspiricy theory like the so-called Opus Dei outfit? :) |
Sargonarhes | 10 Jan 2009 4:26 p.m. PST |
A world wide armed Catholic organization? The Brotherhood from Mutant Chronicles? The real questions should be just what is the yield of the rumored suit case nukes the Soviets supposedly had made? And what if Islamic terrorists did get a hold of some? |
jpattern2 | 10 Jan 2009 5:37 p.m. PST |
Yields from .01 kiloton up to 1 kiloton are the most common yields I've seen referenced for suitcase nukes, but I've also seen mentions of yields up to 15 kilotons for larger two-man portable devices. Only the US and the USSR have really had the capability to make a true suitcase or backpack nuke. I think a more likely scenario is a truck, motorboat, or small plane packed with explosives and radioactive industrial and medical waste. |

Sargonarhes, it was just something that came up during the last round of ETA bombings in Spain that several military personnel targeted in the Spanish Army had links to both Opus Dei and some other Catholic order that as stated previously has a mostly military membership, though not chaplains. Just one of those little 'glitch' facts like the single line mention in Harper's articel on the secret and sinister Skulls that mentione dthat neither Bush daughter has kjoined ( Though tapped) but one is a member of the Trowel And Chalice. And who are they, you ask? All I can find out is that they are Yale-based and female only. Talk about secretive . . . |
Frederick | 12 Jan 2009 7:39 a.m. PST |
While there are lots of Catholics in military organizations, the only one that I know of that is explicitly Catholic is the Swiss Guard, and they are not much of a threat to anyone Opus Dei is pretty hard core, but is essentially a civilian organization There is some confusion as to what is meant by the "Church Militant" – despite the marital name, what this refers to are living Christians (militant in the sense of struggling with sin) while the Church Triumphant are for those who are in Heaven This is very off topic – but what the heck Walrus – watch out for those posts about secret societies! If Hollywood movies are any guide, next thing you know, you wind up waking up in a bunker in the Rockies in a secret headquarters! |
brass1 | 12 Jan 2009 8:01 a.m. PST |
I've always said there was nothing wrong with New Orleans that a small thermonuclear device couldn't cure. By the bye, don't discount the Swiss Guards too quickly. They may still lug halberds around where the tourists can see them but the interior guards carry SMGs and assault rifles. Not much use against nukes, though. LT |
Covert Walrus | 19 Jan 2009 5:00 a.m. PST |
brass1, good point – Isn't the only modification to the original Michealangelo desinged uniform pockets in the jacket for stun grenades and ammunition? Frederick, if any of those conspiriacy theories were true I would in my position be able to get any job I asked for, any woman ditto, and be able to run this whle city: So I *know* it's all garbage ;) |

Hey, nobody in this country expects Barack to live beyond March . . . Sorry, but there's just so much hype about him that the national 'Tall Poppy' syndrome is coming out and spreading to non-kiwis. CC, are you suggesting a terrorist suitcase bomb or an attack by a major power here? The former would be bad enough, but I don't see it causing a war, more like a collapse of the US into internal struggle among the three sides ( Conservative extremists glad he's gone, Feminists ditto but struggling with guilt, and Liberals with a lot of rage at being denied their shining light mainly) while attempting to send overseas troops into the area in question. Other country's reactions . . . Hard to say. China could be quietly pleased, and start to get more insistent on Beijing's policy ( According to BBC reports ) that any area with a 20% or greater Ethnic Chinese population is in fact a Chinese province. Russia splits between a faction wanting to help find the culprits for boosting its international credibility and a group wanting to send 'aid workers' into the USA to negate the regrowth and fill the vacuum left in world affairs before the Chinese did. Certain countries would now be pleased that the biggest member of certain treaty organisations was out of the way, and begin to throw political muscle around, then move on to military weight. The UN would be running in circles trying to organise something without it's biggest money source, though it wouldn't fall apart totally – It would be torn between China, South America and Europe for a while, then probably fall into the European sphere. Africa would be once again a plaything for the new economic colonial powers of Europe and China, and possibly ripe for Islamic extremists. As for the Middle East . . . Three possibilities; The Saudis, Jordan and Qatar wakeup, form a coalition and begin to beat their neighbours into some kind of moderate Muslim unity, offering a cool but friendly hand to Israel in the process; The more belligerent Arabic states join forces and take on Israel, while the UN gets caught in the middle and the Israelis retaliate in the Mother of All Disasters; Or the bellicose Arabic states spend a huge amount of time partying, recommence to bicker among themselves and are taken one by one by the moderate states and Israel and rendered ineffective before they can do anything, then settle into serfdom under their neighbours in each case requiring more redrawing of maps. Canada will argue about whether to help their southern neighbours or keep the Quebecois happy, which will extend to worrying about what Europe will think . . . Mexico will be too damn busy to worry about it, as the population starts to move North in waves. Australia will start laughing, then suddenly notice what Indonesia is doing. New Zealand will be laughing and paying less for diesel, then will realise that Auckland is now a Chinese province, be trying to sell wool to the Mexicans for jumpers to wear in the Midwest and have to adapt to being Europe's dairy farm again. One word of advice to Mr. Obama – DUCK!!!!!!! |
Cacique Caribe | 20 Jan 2009 4:45 a.m. PST |
All I'm saying is that timing plays a lot on which city would get hit when. Unlike what realtors want you to believe, location is not everything. The importance of a city increases and wanes with occasional cyclical events (in this case, an Inauguration in DC). Therefore, importance of a nuke strike would suffer significantly after the event opportunity passes. CC |
