My imagi-nation of Cavenderia is being raided on the southern coast by Bizerrcan Bashi-Bazouks. There is currently one (1) regiment stationed along the coast. There is one major port Spilt and several minor villages. What would be a legitimate defense of the area until the coast can be given additional troops. Historically speaking would the regiment maintain full strength within the major port, keep one (1) battalion to defend the port and divide the second battalion into companies or divisions to support the various villages or some other defense? Or would the regiment have been dispersed among the different villages to begin with?

If it's a major port town (or city), I'd imagine the entire unit would be in town to better keep an eye on them to avoid desertions and to ease supplying them. If it isn't a really large town, then I would think that they'd be spread out amongst the port and the local larger towns to be billeted upon the peasants to save money (with the colonel pocketing the savings of not using the Ducal [Grand Ducal?] stores. Being Inhaber hath its privileges.)

And I'd suggest to the [Grand?] Duke that if pirates, brigands or smugglers are causing problems, that he raise a regiment of true dragoons (i.e. infantry mounted on poor quality horses for transport and not for fighting from except in extremis) based in the port town with squadrons patrolling the area.

And enjoy the skirmishing/small actions you'll have trying to muster the local garrison to fight the raiding Bashis.

@ andygamer: as mentioned in various 'Cavenderian' threads here, Prinz Geoffrey is currently publishing regulations for his army, and welcomes suggestions about uniforms. The currently published § deal only with the infantry: cavenderia.blogspot.com
Since you -wisely- urged him to raise a regiment of dragoons, I'm sure Prince Geoffrey would appreciate to know how you endvisage the uniform (and guidon) of this unit.
BTW, no blog of yours yet, I fear?

Dragoons intended to fight as mounted infantry would probably wear 'bottines' (leather gaiters) rather than heavy cavalry boots – thus among the so useful "NBA" uniform templates nba-sywtemplates.blogspot.com the most appropriate may be a French Dragoon in tricorn:

though, to have an uniform more 'modern' / more in accordance with the current Cavenderian style cavenderia.blogspot.com , it's rather easy by copy & paste to sustitute a tricorn to the helmet of the Schomberg Dragoon:

(coat with lapels & without buttonholes lacing).

Note that one doesn't need to have a blog to have a blogger ID (allowing to post comments on other people's blog – or to contribute to a "collective" blog such as 'Emperor vs Elector' emperor-elector.blogspot.com ). When you try to post a comment on a blog not allowing 'anonymous' comments, you have a link to the connexion to blogger, there another link allowing to create your blogger ID.
You can post a "photo" on your blogger profile: in the 'EvE group, most of us place instead the coat-of-arms or flag of their Imagi-Nation, or the portrait of its ruler (their 'avatar' in the role of this ruler): this provides a pleasant 'visual signature' of your comments to blog messages.
Now at least 4 members of 'EvE', while having thus a blogger ID, have not yet posted there: hopefully they will soon come out of the closet!
