Hi,

Anyone have a reference to the colours of the above regiment in 1811 in Spain.

Thanks,

John

If you mean uniforms, the were the standard red coat with light blue facings; officers' lace was silver.

If you mean flags, I'm not sure they had any (possible reasons – a relatively new unit, a foreign unit, less than totally reliable, light troops and so operating dispersed most of the time…who knows?). If they did, it would have been a standard pair of King's (union flag) Colour and a Regimental Colour in light blue with some sort of central design; I know some of the Swiss regiments that deserted to the British after the Revolution had flags, and that these had the characteristic "pile wavy" cantons and often a Masonic eye as well, but not sure if the CBs did the same.

The Chasseurs Britannique are mentioned in 'The Letters Of Private Wheeler 1809-1828'. He served in the 51st which was brigaded with them in the Peninsula.

Although he does not mention their flags, he has a very low opinion of them. He says they "cannot be trusted. I wish they were at the Devil or any where else, so that we were not plagued with them".

I would guess that it is entirely possible that they did not carry a flag. If they ran away as often as Wheeler suggests, any flags could well have been lost anyway!

Thanks,

I just suppose I will have to invent a flag!!

I'm giving mine the flags Supercillus mentioned when I finish them.

Prove me wrong!
