A while back someone posted about converting an old mouse into a Hover tank/craft for Star Wars use. At the time I didn't have a spare mouse, but now I do and can't find the link to the guys site. Any one remember anything about it?

Question:

But where does one go about buying a broken/old mouse? Is there a computer mouse graveyard somewhere?

I've got 30-40 broken mice from work stored up just for this purpose. Every time a student breaks one beyond repair, I claim it :-)

Failing that, you can buy mice (in the UK at least) for about £3.00 GBP or so. Not too bad. CC, check your local computer shops/online resellers etc. There are some really cheap mice out there – not any good for a PC really, but great to cut up. I tend to try and go for symmetrical ones.

I also might suggest checking with one of your local computer repair shops. If you ask them nicely the may be willing to save a few for you that they are going to toss.

Matakishi's isn't the site I remember but is great just the same! I have no skill at building stuff, but I think I can do that.

Thanks

I would say there are mouse graveyards everywhere

Try the local recycling centre…

Maybe this is the one you're thinking about?

Was it the chap with the FFL done up scifi style?

Hmmm.

Now I wonder what sort of vehicles could be done using other mundane things such as wireless phones and remote controls.

If you work at a larger company you should just check with your IT guys. We have a bin of older PS3 mices at our place. They're not broken, but since they are USB they are just as worthless to us..

Grimmnar02 Jul 2008 10:48 p.m. PST

CC,
If your that curious hit this link TMP link and scroll down to BlackWidoPilot's post to answer your query. :-)

Namuraz,
PS2 mice are never obsolete no matter how many USB mice ya have. :-)

Goodwill around here is a good source of $1 USD mice. They're optimechanical jobs usually, so they're *useless* except as hovertanks. OTOH, at a computer store I used to work at, we got those kind of mice new for less than $1 USD each. They came in a 10x10x10 box with one original driver diskette and 999 virus-infected duplicates.

I bought 30 mice at £1.20 GBP a pop several months ago for a project that never got past the prototype stage. I am in the process of making one sci-fi hovercraft from a mouse, ipaq cradle and miscellaneous bits and pieces which will be crewed by four "care bear" space marines.

If I could get to my photobucket account from work, I'd post WIP pictures.

Blackscribe,

I like the source of where you get your mice, or did get your mice. LOL Curious, the place ya worked didnt happen to shut down about four months ago did it? :-)

Oh man.

Now I'm just waiting for my Logitech trackball to fail and need a new one. I can see a hover tank for 15mm troops in that thing now, unfortunately Logitech hardware seems to last forever with me.

Cacique Caribe04 Jul 2008 4:48 p.m. PST

Grimmnar,

Wowl. You are right. That Leland (Black Widow Pilot) is really something else!

Yeah CC, he can do a thing or three with odds and ends lying about the house. I personally believe he has a house of elves doing his dirty work.

And the ODB is correct. I have yet to figure em out. Havent yet in about 10 years now i think it has been. I can only think that maybe, and i do mean MAYBE one person has. That would be his superior half. :-)

Ask your local school for "dead" computer mice.
Students break things.
