I'm looking for 28mm minis that could reasonably pass for the insect-like Selenites from the 1964 film adaptation of H. G. Wells' First Men in the Moon.

Any suggestions?

Hi J.B.;

Did you just watch that movie on AMC this evening? lol

I did and was thinking the same thing.

I watched it too… but my quest is to find a way of representing one of the 'moon cows'…

Gentlemen, try this link:

venusboys, I remember several years ago a local party store, which has since gone out of business, had in stock a few fairly large rubber caterpillars (about a foot in length) that would have made excellent moon cows. Might be a good idea to search out for them via Google.

By the way, the movie was on TCM, right after the sci-fi classic '20 Million Miles to Earth'.

I would go with the Geonosians from the Star Wars collectibles game. You used to find them fairly inexpensively by Googling Star Wars singles. Several of the webshops who sell single figures had them.

Scheltrum Miniatures make Selenites

I actually have some that I was thinking of ebaying as I'll never get round to using them…

I did watch the film last night. Quite enjoyable.

Saginaw, I did a search before posting and that TMP 'Selenite' link didn't show up in the message boards. Odd.

Scroll down and you'll find them under the Figures heading.

That's strange, Jerzei, but I did access the link through Google.

That's perfect, Saginaw! thumbs up

Great job Saginaw;

You're right about the movie being on TCM.

I was channel surfing a bit.

I also watched the 20 Million Miles to Earth, which I hadn't seen since boyhood.
Had forgotten most things about that movie, except for the "Elephant vs. Alien" scene.
Thanks
Joe

Yes, moon cows are easy.

Just go out into the woods to collect live specimens for your gaming table, if using 6mm troops, or the garden for the more fearsome looking tomato bug variety. If I recall correctly, the latter are a nice fearsome looking combination of green overall camo. with red horns, and spikes.

Since the latter are larger, you could use them with 15mm – 20mm troops.

John Mceuan's (sp) Ralnii or Drenoi? One are insects and the other lisards.

Jerzei Balowski09 Jun 2008 4:18 p.m. PST

Top Gun, the only problem with your idea is that it's really difficult to base those critters as they're moving. Don't even get me started about how hard they are to paint … wink

it's 'Dreenoi'…from Reviersco at tin-soldier dot com I believe…the Ralnai are lizard-ish beings…Dreenoi look like upright ants…and very skeletal…you'd like them!!! (they taste like crab and like to return the 'flavor' if they catch humans…)

*slish…

Second on the Dreenoi. The ones I have are equipped with two type of weapons (rifle like and shotgun/blooper type) they also have a backpack that looks like somekind of flying pack. There was another figure (called a brain bug) that I never painted up. The third type has no weapons or backpack.

They are ,as DWW said, very skeletal with two arms and legs. The size is true 25mm and appear small even next to RalPartha Battletroops.

Black Tree do zarbi (ants that walk on their hind legs) in their Doctor Who range. A bit expensive at £2.50 GBP each though.

Regardless of what you choose to use in the end for selenites you need loads of them for that "crawling with them" effect.
